We beat up on Chicago an awful lot, but, in our defense, it’s fun. They make it easy because of a long and storied history of doing stupid things. As a result, it might be low-hanging fruit, but it’s fruit we’re going to smack at just the same because it’s fun.

And they deserve it.

Still, I firmly believe in giving credit where credit is due. Normally, that doesn’t apply to the Windy City, but in a case of every squirrel finding a nut, Chicago managed to do something right for a change.

They lowered the boom on someone who deserved it.

A Chicago man who fired a machine gun at an off-duty Chicago police officer during a road rage altercation on the Stevenson Expressway has been sentenced to 15 years in prison, court records show.

Neither the officer nor the accused man, 26-year-old David Abarca, was injured in the August 2022 shootout. But a 24-year-old woman driving the car Abarca was riding in suffered serious injuries when one of the officer’s bullets struck her in the head.

…

Investigators found a handgun with an extended magazine outfitted with an auto-fire switch and a green laser sight lying on an embankment about 15 feet from the crashed vehicle. They also found 23 shell casings that had been ejected from the recovered firearm. Abarca initially denied possessing a firearm.

Abarca had faced attempted murder and other charges, but those charges were dropped after he pleaded guilty to possessing a machine gun in a vehicle. Judge Steven Watkins sentenced him to 15 years in prison with credit for 1,493 days earned while in the Cook County Jail. Prosecutors said Abarca was adjudicated delinquent as a juvenile for armed robbery in 2018 and unlawful possession of a weapon in 2017, prosecutors said during an initial court hearing.

Now, I’m not happy that it’s over the gun charge since full-auto weapons should be perfectly legal to possess and to possess in a car, on a train, in the sunshine, or in the rain. Or anywhere else you want.

But I have to believe that at least some of these 15 years are because he lost his crap over traffic in Chicago, tried to murder a cop, and his actions resulted in an innocent woman being seriously hurt. In other words, he got that long because he freaking deserved it and then some. It’s not that he had a certain type of gun that leads me to say it, but because he was clearly a violent dirtbag who shouldn’t be allowed to walk around in public.

And it’s not like this was a one-time occurrence, since he’d been convicted as a juvenile twice.

So, he got locked up and locked up for a long time. When we’re constantly seeing other people doing such things, getting suspended sentences for similar crimes, I’ll take the violent crap-weasel getting a long prison sentence. No, I don’t like that it’s technically for a gun charge, but this sentence isn’t just for that. It seems pretty obvious that it wasn’t.

And that’s why I’m giving Chicago some props for once, even if it’s not ideal. Lock more bad people up for a long time and watch what happens in Chiraq.
