Walz’s Gun Control Pitch Not Sitting Well With Some On His Side of the Fence

Tim Walz has been pushing gun control since the moment he decided he wanted to run for statewide office in Minnesota. It’s funny how often someone who gets elected at a regional level is pro-gun, then suddenly becomes anti-gun when they want to woo the entire anti-gun state. Weird, ain’t it?

Anyway, as you no doubt know, Walz unveiled his package of gun control measures earlier this week. He hasn’t had any luck on these things in recent years, mind you, but he figures the shooting at Annunciation Catholic School in Minneapolis will change all of that. He undoubtedly expected some opposition, too, but what’s funny to me is the form some of that is taking.

It’s not just people like you and me, generally speaking, who are lashing out.

In a popular Minnesota Reddit thread reacting to the announcement, one user summed up the frustration bluntly: “What the hell, Tim.” Another called the proposal “an amazingly bad and tone deaf idea.”

Minnesota has endured a turbulent year marked by high-profile shootings, federal law enforcement operations in Minneapolis, and heightened political tension. For some residents, that broader climate makes additional firearm restrictions feel disconnected from reality.

One commenter wrote, “Blue states disarming their citizens in the face of fascist assault is idiotic at best and collaboration at worst.”

Another added, “This is a bad call overall, given the attacks on MN dems leading up to midterms.”

A recurring theme in the discussion was distrust of law enforcement and concern over government overreach. Several users referenced past no knock warrants and federal immigration enforcement activity as reasons they believe personal firearm ownership is more necessary now, not less.

“After the showing of local and federal law enforcement and the weak response of elected officials, I can only feel my safety is affordable by myself, my family and hopefully my neighbor,” one user wrote.

Now, these aren’t the words of your right-wing, pro-gun opposition in Minnesota. These arguments seem to come from the left. Later, a self-identified gun-owning progressive took issue with Walz’s proposals, and it kind of echoes much of this.

It’s weird seeing opposition to gun control from the left, but considering the rhetoric the left has engaged in following the start of ICE operations in Minneapolis, I don’t suppose it should be.

Many are arming themselves out of fear of ICE. There have been several stories published here alone along those lines, so nothing about this should be shocking, but it is.

Part of that is that progressives often support gun control laws even if they want to own guns, mostly because they figure they’ll be exempt from them or something. There are some leftist pro-gun folks out there who oppose pretty much any gun control on principle, but there aren’t many,  and there’s no reason to believe Minnesota is some hotbed of them.

But still, folks are less than thrilled with Walz.

I’m still not cool with the idea that they should be armed to protect themselves from federal agents enforcing decades-old laws that wouldn’t require this kind of federal response if the locals picked up the phone when they arrested an illegal, but here we are just the same.

I guess that, if it keeps Walz from running the table with his anti-gun agenda, I don’t really care why they’re suddenly in favor of the Second Amendment.
