What Happens When SNAP Runs Out?

Whether people should be getting SNAP or not is a topic that goes beyond what we cover here at Bearing Arms. There are plenty of places throughout the Townhall family where they’ve covered it. Hell, there’s even a couple of places elsewhere you can find where I, personally, covered it, such as here and here.

But there’s something we need to understand about SNAP, and that is that some people feel entitled to it, right or wrong, and are talking about doing some very naughty things if they don’t get it on Saturday.

Let’s start with a woman who says she would have aborted her kids if she knew she wouldn’t get food stamps.

Look at this next guy, who is wearing a nice hoodie in a nice car while he threatens violence if he can’t get some of YOUR tax dollars to shove food down his gullet.

Next, there’s the brazen thieves – people who are threatening crime and violence if they can’t have YOUR tax money that the government takes from YOUR FAMILY so they can buy snacks from Costco.

Yeah, it’s not great.

Again, I talked a bit about this at Townhall, but today, I need to talk about something different but related.

A couple of days ago, a reader reached out to ask what we should do if things get…sporty in the grocery store parking lot. After all, these people are talking about taking food, and if we’ve bought it and they want to take it, what should we do?

Now, understand that I’m not an attorney, and nothing I’m about to say constitutes legal advice. I’m just a guy on the internet who is smarter than a whole lot of people out there, but dumber than a whole lot of others. I won’t tell you what you should do.

I’m just going to tell you what I’m going to do should that happen.

The easy answer, the de-escalation answer, is to just give up the groceries. Hypothetically, in time, they’ll have food, they’ll stop the looting, and things will be restored to normal.

The problem with that is that we don’t know how long the Schumer Shutdown will continue. There’s an issue about encouraging this kind of behavior, which is something the reader in question was concerned with, and for good reason.

I’m not going to voluntarily give up anything to these people. I work hard for my money, and I have a family to feed. I can’t exactly afford to feed half of my hometown. If they decide my groceries are worth a felony charge, that’s on them.

Honestly, I think a lot of the people talking all big and bad are just that, talking. They’re getting rowdy online, but I suspect some of them aren’t even on SNAP. They’re just using the current crisis to farm views, such as people in very nice cars or homes who are screaming into the ether about how unfair it is that Uncle Sam might not give them any money on Saturday.

But if they are, just do yourself a favor and have a plan, your firearm, and a firm understanding of your state’s use-of-force laws.

Let’s just hope that things don’t get as sporty as some claim they’ll make them.
