President Donald Trump stood near Marine One on Monday to mark the opening of a new White House helipad. Much of what he said was difficult to hear on the available White House video feed.
Hours later, the White House launched “TRUMP TV: The Essentials Station,” a new 24/7 stream of administration-produced videos.
The launch came after the five-network television pool suspended its coverage when CNN, which was scheduled for pool duty Monday, was prevented from entering the White House grounds.
ABC, CBS, CNN, Fox and NBC said no replacement network would take CNN’s place, showing solidarity in a polarized America.
Trump TV Goes Live
The new stream packages speeches, administration announcements and previously recorded presidential appearances into a continuous feed available through White House digital platforms and YouTube.
The White House promoted the launch Monday on its official X account, saying the channel would run 24/7 and be updated in real time with past moments, announcements and new material from the administration.
A White House official told Military.com the channel is intended to replay what the official called the president’s “greatest hits,” which the administration believes traditional media does not cover fairly.
The official said Trump’s address to the United Nations would air on Trump TV later on Tuesday.
Why the Television Pool Stopped Covering Trump
Trump announced Friday that CNN, MS NOW and Politico would no longer be permitted on White House grounds, accusing the organizations of publishing false reporting.
Asked about the restrictions on CNN, MS NOW and Politico, the White House official said the outlets remain capable of reporting from outside the White House grounds.
“The Fake News has no place demanding a spot in the President’s Oval Office,” the official said.
MS NOW, CNN and Politico dispute that rationale. Their lawsuit argues that excluding them based on the substance of their coverage violates the First and Fifth Amendments.
CNN was scheduled Monday to handle the television pool, the rotating arrangement through which the major networks take turns providing footage that is then shared with other organizations.
After CNN could not perform that assignment, ABC News, CBS News, CNN, Fox News Media and NBC News agreed to suspend television-pool coverage rather than substitute another network.
The networks said the public has an interest in receiving independent information about the government and objected to excluding an organization because of its reporting.
The White House maintains viewers still have access to government-produced live video. The White House official told Military.com the administration continues to livestream its own feed through Facebook and YouTube.
That feed is separate from the rotating television pool operated by independent news organizations, which normally provides video and audio that networks and other outlets can distribute.
The suspension does not mean reporters have stopped covering the president. CNN, MS NOW and Politico continued covering Trump’s Tuesday appearance at the United Nations using U.N.-issued credentials, and other parts of the White House press corps remain active.
Monday’s helipad appearance provided an immediate example of what can change without the regular television pool. With no network pool crew providing its normal audio setup, Trump’s comments were difficult to hear on the government feed as Marine One operated nearby.
Why the Pool Matters to Military Coverage
The dispute has particular relevance when the president is acting as commander in chief.
The White House press pool keeps a small group of journalists near the president when space or security prevents unrestricted media access. Their reporting, photographs, audio and video are then shared with the wider press corps.
The White House Correspondents’ Association says the 13-person domestic travel pool travels with the president outside the Washington area, while Air Force One reserves 13 press seats that include network television personnel, wire reporters, photographers, radio and print journalists.
That system becomes particularly important during presidential travel, military visits and unexpected national-security events. The association notes that pooled journalists have documented presidents through events ranging from assassination attempts to the Sept. 11 attacks, when reporters accompanied President George W. Bush as he was moved through military installations following the attacks.
For Military.com readers, that means the dispute can affect the independent visual record when Trump travels aboard Air Force One, departs aboard Marine One, visits troops or military installations, or makes remarks during fast-moving national-security events.
Asked how independent television access would be maintained during presidential travel, military visits and national-security events while the network pool remains suspended, the White House official pointed to the administration’s existing Facebook and YouTube livestreams but did not directly address whether independent pool access would resume.
The Pentagon Has Faced Its Own Press Access Fight
The White House dispute comes after a separate battle this year over journalists’ access to the Pentagon.
A federal judge ruled in March that portions of the Defense Department’s press-access policy violated the First and Fifth Amendments and permanently blocked key provisions of the policy.
Military.com previously reported that the rules restricted credentialed Pentagon journalists and raised questions about reporters’ ability to gather information that had not been formally approved for release.
The White House dispute involves a different institution and access system, but it follows a separate legal fight this year over journalists’ access to officials responsible for military and national-security decisions.
For now, the White House has its new 24-hour video stream while the major television networks remain out of the presidential TV pool.
Trump said Tuesday that he would “probably” allow CNN, MS NOW and Politico back into the White House if the court rules against his administration.
A federal court hearing on the outlets’ challenge to the ban is scheduled for Wednesday.
