WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW
  • Steve Scalise says socialism is a central issue in the November elections.
  • He argues House Democrats support policies on socialism and illegal aliens voting.
  • Scalise says Hakeem Jeffries has lost control of the Democratic Party.
  • He claims socialists have overtaken the party’s remaining liberal establishment.

House Majority Leader Steve Scalise said the November elections will give voters a choice over the future direction of Congress, arguing that socialist policies have gained increasing influence within the Democratic Party.

Scalise said his travels to congressional districts around the country have convinced him that voters are becoming more aware of what he sees as the ideological stakes of the election.

“I’m really looking forward to what’s coming in November, because the folks, the voters out there, and I’ve been to a lot of different districts around the country already, Midwestern districts, West Coast, East Coast, people are starting to understand that socialism is on the ballot,” Scalise said.

He argued that conservatives cannot afford to stay home during the election because control of the House would determine which policies lawmakers are positioned to pursue.

“This is an election where you cannot sit at home,” Scalise said.

Scalise pointed to a recent House vote on a resolution condemning socialism.

The measure passed 220-192, with eight Democrats voting in favor, 192 Democrats voting against it, and two voting present.

“If you watch those votes you just talked about, Kellyanne, 96% of House Democrats said socialism’s okay, and by the way, in that same resolution, they said illegals voting in our federal elections is okay,” Scalise said.

He continued by arguing that the vote reflected what Democrats would pursue if they regained control of the House.

“96% of Democrats. That’s what they would do if they got control of the House. If conservatives stayed at home, that’s what happens,” Scalise said.

Scalise also pointed to a House vote concerning the size of the Supreme Court.

On Sept. 2, the House considered a proposed constitutional amendment requiring the Supreme Court to consist of nine justices. The measure received 212 votes in favor and 206 against, falling short of the two-thirds threshold required for passage. One Democrat voted for the measure and 205 voted against it.

“99%, as you mentioned, said let’s pack the Supreme Court,” Scalise said.

He then turned to House Democratic Leader Hakeem Jeffries, arguing that the party’s leadership has lost control over its ideological direction.

“And then you look at Hakeem Jeffries, he’s lost control of his party,” Scalise said.

“The socialists have taken over, and it’s happening everywhere.”

Scalise also pointed to Democratic primary contests as evidence of the shift he described, saying candidates associated with the party’s socialist wing have defeated candidates backed by establishment Democratic leaders.

“I mean, you’ve got Mandami candidates beating Hakeem’s candidates in a lot of these primaries, and Hakeem’s candidates are far-left liberals, by the way,” Scalise said.

His office has repeatedly used similar language in recent public appearances, arguing that Democrats have moved further toward socialist policies and highlighting the Sept. 1 House vote as evidence of that shift.

Scalise also said the moderate wing of the Democratic Party has largely disappeared, contrasting today’s party with an earlier era when more conservative and centrist Democrats held congressional seats.

“You literally could find, you can find a spotted owl in D.C., Kellyanne, before you can find a Blue Dog,” Scalise said.

“There are no Blue Dog Democrats left,” he continued.

Scalise concluded by describing the Democratic Party as increasingly divided between liberals and socialists, with the latter gaining the upper hand.

“It’s liberals versus socialists, and the socialists have taken over the Democrat Party now.”
