A Dutch ‘Tugboat Harbor’ No Longer Willing to Be an Asylum Seeker Safe Port

The town of Maassluis in the Netherlands, just downriver from Rotterdam, has been settled since about 1340 or so, according to Wiki. It’s pretty smallish, with just shy of 34,000 people, give or take a couple of hundred.

Being Dutch, on a river and the last town of any size before the Het Sher becomes the Nieuwe Waterweg, and then dumps into where the English Channel meets the North Sea, you can imagine they make most of their living on and from the water. The city’s website calls it ‘the tugboat port of the Netherlands’ (I’m assuming that means the country’s tugboat capital). It looks totes adorbs in the pictures I’ve seen, as you’d imagine something that’s been around for 680+ years would.

The first city on the Waterweg canal as well as the tugboat port of the Netherlands. Discover the maritime history of Maassluis with its numerous (seagoing) tugboats, the harbour, the beautiful monumental buildings and the historic city centre.

Actually, though, not every picture has been an example of ‘Visit Maassluis’ postcard quality, and that’s part of the little town’s problem.

There are now home videos, like this one, playing on a local Crime Stoppers TV and social media feeds, asking for tips.

Steen door de ruit en explosief geplaatst: grote schrik bij moeder met twee kinderen. Wie is de man op de beelden? Tips welkom #Maassluis pic.twitter.com/gaQtFqumfa

…Stone through the window and explosively placed: big scare for mother with two children. Who is the man in the footage? Tips welcome #Maassluis

So, yes, it turns out this fellow not only heaved a rock through this woman’s window, but followed up with one of those explosive pyrotechnicals all the ‘youths’ in Europe seem so fond of now.

She and her two children were lucky to escape with no harm, but they are, as you might imagine, frightened out of their minds.

Most of the comments echo this one, so I can only assume this sort of event is not uncommon in Maassluis. I’ll bet most of you have it even half translated already.

Diversiteit is onze krachtige explosie.

— 🇳🇱🌛Het Maan Spook👻🕉 (@the_moon_spook) June 14, 2026

Per Google, yeah – my first guess checks out.

“Diversiteit is onze krachtige explosie” translates to “Diversity is our powerful explosion” or “Diversity is our powerful burst.”

Lest you think the stabby types have bypassed the Tugboat capital, they haven’t. An imam was stabbed by a 23-year-old last month – no further information available – but they don’t seem to have fallen prey to the scourge much of the rest of the Netherlands is suffering from at the moment.

I mean, check this newspaper report on a bombing in Amsterdam out – the verbiage is amazing.

Audi seen speeding away from explosion that destroyed Amsterdam gym, injuring at least 7

Two witnesses saw young people flee the scene and an Audi speed away shortly after an explosion destroyed a gym in Amsterdam Nieuw-West overnight, the Telegraaf reported. The emergency services can’t rule out that there are still people trapped in the rubble, a spokesperson for the local security office, Veiligheidsregio Amsterdam Amstelland, told NL Times after NOS reported that there are indications that people are trapped.

The explosion happened at around 12:15 a.m. at a 24-hour gym and fitness center that is in the annex of an apartment building on Osodorper Ban. The blast left a massive hole in the gym’s wall. It is unclear how many people were inside at the time. At least seven people were injured, and the emergency services are still searching the rubble.

…A local living near the affected apartment building told NL Times that they heard an argument seconds before the explosion and saw two people running away. Witnesses also saw police investigating a black Volkswagen at the scene.

So far, the authorities have said nothing about the cause of the explosion, only telling the media that the police’s focus is currently on the rescue operation, not the investigation.

Explosives and explosions are not uncommon in the neighborhood. There are frequent reports of ATM bombings or explosives left at residential homes, according to NOS.

WHUT?!

Again, it so reminds me of the Katie Hopkins’ ‘bomb in a bin’ story from in Sweden.

How do people allow themselves to be driven into living like this?

The people of Maassluis have decided that they won’t, and, according to The Spectator, they’re known for this sort of rebellious intransigence when they are finally tired of being told what to do.

They say ‘no.’

The natives of Maassluis were once nicknamed “snails.” They acquired the name in the 1770s, when the parliament of the Dutch Republic decreed that Psalms should be sung at a faster tempo in church. The citizens of Maassluis and Vlaardingen refused to comply, continuing – like snails – to sing at the slower pace that had been customary for more than two centuries, dating back to the Dutch Revolt against Spanish rule. A minority, reportedly from the local elite, embraced the new rules and began singing more briskly, resulting in chaotic Sunday services in Dutch Reformed churches across the region.

Today, the snails are at it again.

The town’s recently installed municipal executive, comprising the local party Leefbaar Maessluys and the conservative VVD, has produced a coalition program aimed at ending the town’s role in hosting asylum seekers and reducing the impact of large-scale labor migration.

To curb the number of asylum seekers, the coalition have proposed to not renew the licenses of two asylum accommodation sites currently in the town and, beyond that, refusing to host additional asylum seekers under the Spreidingswet, the law designed to distribute asylum seekers awaiting decisions among municipalities across the country.

As the article reports, they’ve devised a brilliant way to use the Dutch system of government-mandated immigrant sheltering to their advantage by simply filling out the questionnaire honestly.

…What is the plan? Under the Spreidingswet, every Dutch municipality is required to submit a proposal indicating how many asylum seekers it is prepared to accommodate. Maassluis intends to comply fully with the law and simply propose: zero.

The fly in the ointment of the brilliant plan is a progressive mayor who wants these diverse cultural enrichment specialists. And don’t it figure.

So, in keeping with the analogy the author started with, the town is speaking with two tongues at the moment, both the mayor’s and the snails’, who are bringing neighboring towns into their chorus with them.

The mayor, for his part, has hooked up the local police to guard his home even though there has not been a single threat issued against him. Classic progressive behavior – start trouble and then drop to the floor as the victim, hoping for a yellow card.

…Will the new Maassluis coalition be successful? Maybe. Despite what some may claim, it is not a far-right insurgency, just a group of local politicians responding to concerns widely shared by their electorate. Nor is Maassluis alone. Neighboring Vlaardingen this week finally welcomed a new local coalition. The town will abandon plans for a new asylum-seeker center and seek to curb further immigration. Asked about the coalition program, the mayor wisely refrained from offering an opinion, noting that it is for the elected council, not him, to determine the town’s direction. Municipalities elsewhere are exploring similar approaches. Instead of defying the law, they are seeking to use it to their advantage.

The people of Maassluis know when to disagree with the authorities – and do so confidently. So when the snails begin moving in a different direction, The Hague would do well to pay attention. They may move slowly, but they have a habit of sensing which way the tide is turning.

If I were the mayor, I’d worry about the town’s other issues instead of arguing for importing more.

This is outside a nursing home, and the residents are in the comments saying they watch it happen every single evening.

And the night shift help at the local home for young girls had some issues with the quality of the help. I sure hope they cleared that up.

Someone should ask the mayor.
