Ach, Du Liebe, the Indignity! 1st Time Ever – Germany Bumped From UN Security Council Seat

German Chancellor Friedrich Merz is having a very bad, miserable, not-so-good week.

Yesterday I told you how the one thing that might go right, being about to cut off some of the benefits the country was paying out to tens of thousands of ‘migrants’ declared deportable, but who weren’t going anywhere any time soon if ever, had been struck down by the European Court of Justice. That august body ruled it broke European law – to hell with German feelings – to deny immigrant criminals their cell phones, cash allowances, personal allowances, transportation tickets, and other sundry needs on top of the ‘food, heated accommodation, hygiene products, and healthcare’ they were still receiving from the German state, courtesy of the long-suffering German taxpayer.

Tough knudels.

I’m sure Herr Chancellor was down in the dumps, but at least he was still someone on the international stage, right? The European Trump Whisperer?

German, by Gott?!

Turns out…not so much.

Yesterday was also voting time at the United Nations in New York for the annual game of musical chairs known as ‘rotating open seats on the UN Security Council.’

There are ten of those who serve staggered two-year terms, and they’re divided among global regional groups.

  • 5 from African and Asian States
  • 1 from Eastern European States
  • 2 from Latin American States
  • 2 from Western European and other States

The other five seats are permanent, come with veto power, and belong to the United States, China, France, the UK (Great Britain and Northern Ireland), and the Russian Federation.

It takes a 2/3 vote of the assembly to gain a seat.

Surely the Germans were a shoo-in, having always had one of the seats on the council, and this year the Germans also hold the General Assembly presidency in the person of Annalena Baerbock.

The voting began, and holy smokes – how awkward.

Watch Ms. Baerbock’s face as Germany gets smoked by…Austria and Portugal?

Germany has failed to win a non-permanent seat on the UN Security Council.

That was one sauerkrauten.

And didn’t the fickle finger of blame start pointing!

It was Russia, Russia, RUSSIA orchestrating this incredible humiliation because the Germans backed Ukraine!

But then they thought about it for a minute or so, and came up with another one.

MAYBE IT WAS BACKING THE ISRAELIS – THEY’RE NOT REALLY POPULAR

Germany’s unprecedented failure to secure a non-permanent seat on the UN Security Council is a direct result of its “complicit stance” toward the Israeli genocide in Gaza and the joint US-Israeli war on Iran, Esmaeil Baghaei, the spokesperson for Iran’s Foreign Ministry, said on… pic.twitter.com/sT67E5tFUG

Austria’s policy towards Israel isn’t all that much different from Germany’s, but who knows.

Maybe it was a combination of all of the above, coupled with the single most important fact no one dares mention – Germany’s a mess. Total paper tiger.

And every last UN butt in those general assembly seats knows it.

This wasn’t just a vote on whether Germany should be a non-permanent member of the Security Council. It was a vote on Germany’s standing in the world.https://t.co/HDXznkUlZW

This was payback time without a worry about retribution. And quite a black eye for Merz.

Germany fails to win UN Security Council seat in major diplomatic setback for Merz

…Germany’s defeat not only represents a diplomatic setback, but it is also likely to fuel domestic criticism of an already-unpopular and politically weakened Merz, particularly because the chancellor ran for the office on a promise to restore his country’s leadership role within Europe.

Germany has, for decades, managed to win one of the non-permanent Security Council seats allocated to Western Europe every eight years. Ahead of the vote, Wadephul led an aggressive lobbying campaign, personally pressing his case to some 80 ministers or ambassadors around the world. But U.N. delegates ultimately favored Portugal and Austria, nations that the foreign minister appeared to dismiss as “smaller” European countries earlier this week.

The vote also marks the latest in a string of diplomatic victories for Lisbon, which has capitalized on its status as a neutral interlocutor between Europe and its former colonies in Africa, Asia and South America to consolidate itself as a major player on the global stage. Former prime ministers António Guterres and António Costa now respectively lead the U.N. and the European Council.

Austria’s successful quest for a seat on the Security Council similarly involved embracing its neutrality, which is constitutionally mandated. The country touted its lack of NATO membership in a bid to win over African, Asian and Latin American countries unhappy with Washington’s moves on the global stage.

German media is already writing dirges for the chancellor, and the huge hit German national image just took while in his tender care.

The chancellor, whose government is fining people one month’s pay for criticizing him online and in overheard comments, had best hire more eavesdropping help after this humiliating loss. The media in all its forms cannot say ‘humiliating’ enough.

🇩🇪 Germany’s UN Security Council dream just crashed and burned.

…The loss breaks a once in a decade tradition of Germany serving on the council.

Berlin’s ironclad support for Israel and Ukraine apparently cost them the Global South votes. Russian lobbying didn’t help either.

Merz wanted to project strength on the world stage. Instead, he got a very public rebuke.

Europe’s economic giant can’t even win a rotating seat anymore. Ouch.

Alternativ for Germany’s (AfD) Alice Weidel pounced, of course.

DIS GUY

One embarrassment follows the next: Merz wanted to bring our country “back onto the international stage” at the start of his chancellorship, but now Germany is left without a seat on the UN Security Council.

For his part, Merz is singing that ‘Never Gonna Give Up’ refrain.

He and Germany’ll be back, even stronger, he swears. And in ten years, they’ll run against less popular contenders.

There’s a plan.

I’ll bet Merz is glad it’s a Friday.
