The son of Senator Rand Paul of Kentucky has landed in hot water after a drunken outburst in a Washington DC bar that left onlookers stunned and fellow Republicans shaking their heads, as reported by The New York Post.

William Paul, the 33-year-old son of the well-known libertarian senator, reportedly unleashed a foul tirade against Jews and gays during a conversation with Congressman Mike Lawler of New York on Tuesday night.

According to Lawler, Paul was heavily intoxicated when he began inserting himself into a private conversation at a busy DC watering hole.

Rand Paul’s son, William Paul, reportedly approached Rep. Mike Lawler at a bar, believing he was Jewish, and told him that if Thomas Massie loses, it will be because of “his people.”

“Rand Paul’s son was sitting next to us at the bar and just started chiming in, drunk and belligerent,” Lawler told The Post.

Here’s What They’re Not Telling You About Your Retirement

The congressman said Paul suddenly went off about politics and antisemitic conspiracies, sparking a confrontation that quickly escalated.

Lawler recalled that when Paul began blaming “my people” for Representative Thomas Massie’s potential reelection troubles, the congressman asked what he meant.

“He goes, ‘Jews,’ and I’m like, ‘Do you think I’m Jewish? I’m Irish Italian Catholic, buddy,’” Lawler recounted. According to Lawler, Paul seemed confused and pressed on anyway, ranting about Jews and the Middle East in bizarre fashion.

The exchange took an even darker turn when Paul reportedly declared, “This war, it’s all about the gays and the Jews, and I hate them both, and I don’t care if they die.”

Lawler said he was shocked by the statement and watched as the senator’s son grew increasingly erratic before leaving the bar. Witnesses say Paul tipped over a stool on his way out of the Capitol Hill establishment.

William Paul’s father, Senator Rand Paul, has often presented himself as a champion of personal liberty and constitutional restraint.

The elder Paul, whose libertarian streak has earned him both conservative and populist support, has not commented on his son’s behavior. Requests for comment from the senator’s office went unanswered on Wednesday.

The apology, however, came swiftly from William Paul’s own social media account.

“Last night, I had too much to drink and said some things that don’t represent who I really am. I’m sorry, and today I am seeking help for my drinking problem,” he posted on the platform X the day after the outburst.

Well that’s embarrassing. I wonder if his dad believes the same. Alcohol is a truth serum. Glad he’s going to get some help. https://t.co/uITn3bZKvy pic.twitter.com/ecAbWh6kYf

The message suggests that the younger Paul hopes to contain the fallout before it causes longer-term damage to his reputation and his father’s.

This is not the first time the senator’s son has run into trouble with alcohol or law enforcement. In 2015, he pleaded guilty to driving under the influence after crashing his Honda truck into a parked car.

Police at the time described him as “belligerent” and reeking of alcohol when they took him into custody.

Even that was not his earliest brush with controversy. In 2013, he was arrested after allegedly assaulting a female flight attendant on a commercial flight to Charlotte, North Carolina.

Authorities charged him upon landing with disorderly conduct and underage consumption of alcohol. Paul was in his early twenties at the time.

Despite these incidents, William Paul built a short career working in Republican political circles. Until June 2025, he served as digital director for Congressman Mike Collins of Georgia.

Before that, he worked for West Virginia Representative Alex Mooney’s office. His resume also includes stints at FreedomWorks and Americans for Tax Reform, two well-known conservative advocacy groups.

Lawler’s frustration over the latest episode extended beyond the ugly slurs themselves.

“It’s absurd, the stuff he was saying. And this is coming from someone who’s supposedly grown up around people in politics,” the congressman remarked. “

You expect more self-restraint from the son of a U.S. senator.”

Observers in Washington were quick to note that Rand Paul’s political style centers on challenging the excesses of Washington’s elite.

Unfortunately, this episode highlighted the personal excess that can accompany the political fame of Capitol Hill families. While few are directly tying the son’s behavior to the senator, the drama has clearly caused embarrassment for the Paul family.

For grassroots conservatives who regard Rand Paul as a rare voice for liberty and fiscal sanity, his son’s alcohol fueled tirade is a cautionary tale about personal responsibility.

The senator has built a career lecturing Washington on moral and constitutional discipline, but this episode reminds voters that political virtue starts at home.

Whether William Paul sincerely seeks help or is just hoping to retreat from the headlines remains to be seen.

For now, the story serves as an unflattering reminder that Washington’s moral sermons often collide with the messy reality of human frailty, even inside the families of those preaching personal responsibility and restraint.
