A pollster warned President Donald Trump in a recent White House meeting that Republicans risk losing the midterms if they ignore voter concerns about affordability and the economy.

Mark Mitchell, head pollster at Rasmussen Reports, told the Daily Caller he met with Trump to discuss polling data showing deep pessimism among Americans.

Trump was “receptive” enough to take the meeting and asked questions, but the message didn’t seem to land, according to Mitchell.

Mitchell said only about one in four Americans believe today’s children will be better off than their parents. “The death of the American dream,” Mitchell called it. “The people think the capitalist system has failed them.” (RELATED: Trump Calls The Word ‘Affordability’ A ‘Democrat Scam’)

The pollster delivered a blunt message, Trump needs a “Contract for America” style partnership with Republicans to show voters the party understands their problems. Mitchell pointed to “corporatism, corporate capture, corporate welfare, oligarchy” as root causes of economic frustration.

He also criticized Trump as “completely tone-deaf” on several issues that alienated his base, including dismissing affordability concerns, the Epstein files controversy, and defending H-1B visas with “billionaire talking points.”

Mitchell’s polling shows 60 to 70 percent of voters under 40 believe the economy is unfair to young people. He warned that young Trump voters hold “very socialistic” views and want the system “drastically attacked.”

Trump’s response left Mitchell uncertain. “It was a very Trump-type conversation but it didn’t feel like it was clicking in a way I was hoping,” Mitchell said.
