After being unable to withstand a ‘devastating Labour revolt,’ Sir Keir said he was only going to hang around long enough to see a new Prime Minister elected.
…Starmer also acknowledged growing opposition within his own party, saying, “The question my party is asking now is whether I am best placed to lead us into the next general election. I have heard the answer of my parliamentary party to that question, and I accept that answer with good grace.”
Starmer said he would remain caretaker prime minister until Labour members choose a new leader in the coming weeks.
“I will ask the National Executive Committee of the Labour Party to set out a timetable with nominations opening on the 9th of July and completed by the summer recess. In the case of a contest, this will ensure a new leader is in place before Parliament returns in September. I will remain in post as prime minister until the contest is complete. And I will do everything I can to ensure an orderly handover of power,” he said.
A victor will be crowned after all these scrappy, vicious, and ambitious Labour rivals meet in the Thunderdome for a to-the-death knife fight, with knives ordered from Amazon before Starmer’s ban on doorstep deliveries of kitchen cutlery went into effect. Everyone in Labour is very familiar with knife crime after two years – in fact, I’d say they’re all experts.
…Wes Streeting is viewed as a leading contender from the party’s centrist wing, while Andy Burnham remains popular among Labour’s grassroots having recently won a seat in Parliament. Deputy Prime Minister Angela Rayner is also expected to play a major role in shaping the succession battle.

Burnham’s also reportedly having to be talked out of making the UK’s ruinous NetZero nutjob, Ed Miliband, the fellow in charge of the Exchequer. That’s right – Burnham wants to give lunatic Miliband, who is already driving the country into the fiscal and dark deep end, the PIN to the UK’s debit card.

Burham also has some classic progressive ideas that even the British courts have started to turn against.
A proponent of criminal charges for misgendering your child? He should run for California governor.
Burham’s already a fan of restricting speech rights for opinions which disagree with Labour positions.
…But there is little reason to believe things will improve under his likely successor, Andy Burnham.
It is believed that the former MP for Makerfield and former head of Labour Together, Josh Simons, who resigned so Burnham could fight a by-election, is set for a plum job at the heart of Downing Street. The Free Speech Union recently exposed Labour’s ‘misinformation mafia’ that Simons led, targeting journalists and others that challenged Starmer’s technocratic managerialism. We anticipate an escalation in Labour’s efforts to suppress dissenting speech on social media in the forthcoming Representation of the People Bill, assuming Burnham doesn’t abandon the legislative programme outlined in the King’s Speech.
Burnham is also keen on bringing forward a ‘fully trans-inclusive’ ban on ‘conversion therapy’, which may mean criminalising parents who ‘misgender’ their confused adolescent children or who withhold consent from their children embarking on irreversible medical pathways.
No doubt there will be numerous other assaults on free speech which we’ll be keeping a close eye on.
British financial markets and wealth consultants (think retirements) are already in a heightened state of alarm at the thought of someone more radical at cash grabs taking the helm than the brow-beaten Starmer. They are particularly concerned, again, about Burnham.
The warning from Nigel Green, CEO of deVere Group, comes as investors assess the implications of Starmer’s decision to step down after a turbulent period for the government and growing speculation over who will lead Labour into the next phase of its administration.
…Nigel Green continues: “The market’s first question isn’t who replaces Keir Starmer. It’s whether the next Prime Minister pushes Britain further towards taxing wealth and capital.
“If investors conclude the answer is yes, sterling falls, gilt yields rise and money leaves.
“It’s that simple.”
The deVere CEO says Andy Burnham’s growing political profile will inevitably draw greater scrutiny from investors seeking to understand the future direction of government policy.
“Andy Burnham’s political stock has risen sharply and markets are paying attention.
“His growing influence immediately raises the probability of wealth taxes becoming a serious policy discussion.
“Investors won’t wait for legislation, they react to direction.”
Nigel Green says Starmer’s departure also throws fresh uncertainty around the future of Chancellor Rachel Reeves, who has been closely associated with the government’s economic strategy.
“Rachel Reeves has been the face of Labour’s economic credibility. Starmer’s resignation leaves a giant question mark over her future.
I thought this line was very telling, as California, New York and Massachusetts, to name a couple of our blue states, have found out.
Not that they’ve learned anything, but it has proven true.
…“There is a dangerous assumption in politics that wealthy people will simply sit still and pay whatever governments demand. They won’t.
“Some will restructure, some will relocate, and some will move capital elsewhere.
“The Treasury can tax wealth, but can’t force wealth to stay.”
