Another Georgia Driving Arrest Story Hits Athens, Two Bulldogs Facing Misdemeanor Charges

Georgia’s football program is back in the headlines for the same issue it has been trying to stop for more than two years.

Georgia linebackers Chris Cole and Darren Ikinnagbon were arrested Wednesday night in Athens on misdemeanor driving related charges, according to ESPN and The Associated Press. Both players were charged after an incident handled by Athens-Clarke County police, adding another entry to a long list of traffic cases tied to the Bulldogs program.

The AP reported that Cole and Ikinnagbon were arrested on misdemeanor charges of speeding and reckless driving. Ikinnagbon was also charged with following too closely. Jail records cited by AP show Cole was booked at 9:59 p.m. and released on $26 bail at 10:39 p.m., while Ikinnagbon was booked at 10:27 p.m. and released on $39 bail at 11:08 p.m.

ESPN’s report matched the same core details and noted the school response through UGA deputy athletic director Steven Drummond. He said, “We are aware of the charges and are actively gathering additional information,” and added, “As this is an ongoing legal matter, we will not be providing further comment at this time.”

The arrests involve two players who contributed at different levels in 2025. Cole, a junior from Salem, Virginia, played in 13 games with one start last season and recorded 59 tackles, seven tackles for loss and 4.5 sacks. Ikinnagbon, a redshirt freshman from Hillside, New Jersey, played in five games and finished with two tackles.

The larger issue is why this story has become a recurring one in Athens.

AP reported in 2024 that Georgia players had been involved in 24 driving related violations, including DUI, reckless driving or speeding, based on reporting from The Atlanta Journal-Constitution. At SEC Media Days in Dallas, coach Kirby Smart said the program had disciplined players through suspensions and fines tied to NIL collective payments. Smart said, “The incidents that have been happening off the field are not something we condone,” and called the situation “very unfortunate, disappointing.” He also said fines had been “substantial” and described them as an effort to deter repeat behavior.

That same report also outlined why the issue became a national story. It referenced the January 2023 crash that killed Georgia offensive lineman Devin Willock and recruiting staffer Chandler LeCroy. AP reported police said LeCroy had a blood alcohol level more than twice the legal limit and was racing another Georgia player, Jalen Carter, at about 104 mph when the SUV left the road and struck utility poles and trees.

The program has continued to deal with related incidents since then.

In March 2025 wide receiver Nitro Tuggle and offensive lineman Marques Easley were suspended from all team activities after Tuggle’s arrest on speeding and reckless driving charges.

In November 2025, offensive lineman Nyier Daniels was dismissed from the team following a high speed police chase in Commerce, Georgia. Daniels faced multiple charges, including felonies, and police alleged he reached 100 mph in a 25 mph zone and 150 mph on Interstate 85. Smart said at the time, “I have not had a chance to talk to him or his family, but obviously he’ll no longer be with us.”

Now, with the arrests of Cole and Ikinnagbon, Georgia is again managing a football story that has little to do with the field and everything to do with a persistent program wide problem the school and coaching staff have publicly acknowledged. The latest charges are misdemeanors, but they arrive in a program context that has already produced suspensions, dismissals, and repeated public warnings from Smart.

Georgia has not announced any team discipline for Cole or Ikinnagbon as of the time of this report.
