Another Michigan Clerk Demands Federal Action to Purge Noncitizens From the Voter Rolls [WATCH]

A second Michigan township clerk has publicly called for federal assistance in verifying the citizenship status of individuals listed on local voter rolls, following a similar request made last week by Barry County Clerk David Olson, as reported by The Gateway Pundit.

Climax Township Clerk Sarah DeBoer of Kalamazoo County released a video on Aug. 24 asking federal officials to assist local election administrators with verifying whether individuals registered to vote are U.S. citizens.

DeBoer said she was joining other Michigan clerks in seeking help while stressing that any review of voter records should comply with state law and protect voter files.

“Hello, my name is Sarah DeBoer. I’m the clerk of Climax Township in Kalamazoo County, Michigan. Today, I’m joining with other clerks across the state of Michigan calling for federal assistance in verifying the citizenship status of those on our voter rolls.”

DeBoer cited Michigan laws MCL 168.515 and MCL 168.520 and said she wanted any verification effort conducted legally and through her office.

“Recently, a whistleblower who was an employee at the [Michigan] Secretary of State’s office came forward alleging that the Secretary of State is registering non-citizens to vote. Contrary to what the supervisor of that employee told them, local clerks have zero ability to verify the citizenship status of anyone in the Qualified Voter Rolls.”

She said absentee ballots were scheduled to be sent out on Sept. 24 and asked for federal officials to respond quickly.

“So, I am asking for federal assistance to do my duty as a local clerk to ensure that those who are registered to vote are also U.S. citizens. Absentee ballots go out on September 24, so I look forward to hearing from someone and working with someone from the federal government very shortly. Thank you very much!”

DeBoer’s request followed a video released last week by David Olson, the clerk connected with Hastings Charter Township in Barry County.

Olson said information provided to the Barry County Sheriff by a whistleblower raised concerns about how voter registrations could be generated when a non-citizen changes an address.

“When a non-citizen changes their address, programming automatically registers that citizen to vote. When the employee advised the supervisor, the supervisor said, ‘That’s okay, because it will be caught downline by the clerks.”

Olson disputed that explanation, saying, “That is not correct! Once it’s in the qualified voter file, there’s no way for me to verify citizenship!”

He further stated, “Therefore, they [non-citizens] are automatically issued a ballot or an absentee ballot. So, since it is my responsibility to safeguard the voter rolls in my township, I’m asking if the federal government is interested in helping verify my citizens’ [voter] rolls?”

Olson said he would cooperate with federal officials seeking to compare records while continuing to protect the voter rolls maintained by his office.

“I will safeguard my voter roll in the office, but they are certainly welcome to come and compare against mine, and this way will uphold the law. I will definitely follow mine, and it will be fair and honest.”

The allegations referenced by the clerks have also been discussed by Barry County Sheriff Dar Leaf, who said a confidential informant employed by the Michigan Secretary of State’s office reported that non-citizens could allegedly be registered when changing their addresses.

According to Leaf’s account, the system involved in customer and automotive records could notify individuals that they had been registered to vote, while local clerks allegedly lacked a way to independently verify citizenship information within the Qualified Voter File.

Leaf said his office referred the matter to the U.S. Department of Justice for investigation of possible violations of federal law involving voting by non-citizens. He has also called on the Michigan Legislature to address the allegations.

DeBoer said she learned of Olson’s request and subsequently began exploring how her township could also seek federal assistance.

With absentee ballots scheduled to go out in September, the calls from Michigan clerks are likely to increase pressure on state and federal officials to address the allegations and determine whether changes to voter verification procedures are needed.
