Bari Bruising 60 Minutes Egos Again, But I Like the Backstory

Okay. So you know I like rabbit holes, and this turned into one that is kind of cool.

As regular CBS Evening News watchers, we’ve been pretty happy with the gentle but persistent metamorphosis of the program since Weiss took over. It’s a pleasant blend of real news, only the occasional obvious partisan burp (especially compared to the past decade), and Tony Dokoupil has just been a pleasure to watch grow comfortable in his seat.

I hear it from you guys, too, when I share some of their really good segments in our Headlines sections. Inevitably, your reactions are ‘CBS did this? Holy bats**t fatman!!’

Yeah – it really was. That direct quote was for the fantastic piece they did before the Fourth of July.

Bari Weiss has also kept a steady course in reining in the network’s crown jewel and the prickliest bunch of prima donnas known to modern man at the venerable 60 Minutes.

I’ve cataloged the meltdown over her dirty, know-nothing hands soiling their scared altar cloths over there since the beginning. It all culminated in spectacular fashion, as only imperial regicides can, when the white prince of Sunday himself was unceremoniously canned after an artistic temper tantrum at an all-hands meeting involving his new young boss, all the while directing ascerbic barbs at the new big boss in absentia. 

Scott Pelley went out in flames, no glory noted.

Weiss reportedly ‘hunkered down’ in her office, whether to let the situation post-Pelley calm down – the ‘bloodbath’ as it’s fondly referred to – or so that the better insulation would help dampen the screams emanating from the 60 Minutes staff writhing in tormented artistic agony. 

The head of CBS News is reportedly behind a self-imposed “Bari-cade.”

Bari Weiss, the editor-in-chief of the network’s news division, has largely remained out of view as fallout from her overhaul of “60 Minutes” continues, according to the Status newsletter.

She has reportedly been ensconced in a secured, sixth-floor office suite at the CBS Broadcast Center in Manhattan’s Hell’s Kitchen nabe.

That was the beginning of June, and lo and behold, the staff’s peace and quiet have been disturbed again.

The monster has emerged from her lair to once more interfere with a 60 Minutes assignment, and heads are exploding. An interview of Nigel Farage that was to have been conducted by veteran correspondent (and, believe me, partisan witch) Holly Williams was suddenly taken from her and reassigned to some new guy.

WHUT?!?!

CBS News Editor-in-Chief Bari Weiss has reportedly intervened in another politically sensitive “60 Minutes” story.

She yanked veteran CBS News reporter Holly Williams from a planned “60 Minutes” interview of British populist politician Nigel Farage in favor of newly hired senior global affairs correspondent Sir Trevor Phillips, according to Breaker Media.

The outlet reported that the Farage story was originally approved by former executive producer Tanya Simon and assigned to Williams and producer Erin Lyall. That was before Simon was fired and Nick Bilton took over as executive producer.

This was a choice plum they just yanked and gave to a perfect stranger, especially in light of the chaos surrounding Farage’s personal finance scandal, the ‘sleaze inquiry,’ and his sudden resignation from his Clacton MP seat (My post on that news here).

…The assignment has taken on added significance in recent days after Farage resigned his seat in Parliament and triggered a by-election in his Clacton constituency while under scrutiny over alleged failures to disclose millions of pounds in financial support and gifts.

Bad enough, huh? Quite a knock to the Williams ego there, particularly if you don’t care much for the new boss’s talents, as it seems most of the surly, resentful cadre there still does.

But what caught my eye was this line:

…Breaker also reported that many veteran “60 Minutes” producers have been unwilling to work on the story because of criticism that Phillips has faced over his views on Islam.

Veteran show producers were concerned about the new guy’s views on …ISLAM?

WHUT?!

That was enough. 

Who is ‘Sir Trevor Phillips,’ how did Bari Weiss find him, and what on earth could be so off-putting about his ‘views on Islam‘ (although I had a sneaking suspicion if 60 Minutes producers didn’t care for them, what they might be) that were so intolerable as to make him toxic?

First off, I found a Paramount press release from mid-June naming Sir Trevor the ‘senior global affairs correspondent’ for CBS News. There’s no denying his news chops, that’s for damn sure.

…Phillips joins CBS News with more than three decades of experience in broadcasting and international affairs. He is a three-time winner at the Royal Television Society Journalism Awards. Most recently, he hosted Sky News’ flagship program “Sunday Morning with Trevor Phillips,” where he has won praise for his sharp interviews and his fearlessness in confronting the knottiest questions.

“Trevor Phillips cuts through the noise. His decades-long career is a masterclass in seeing beyond groupthink and pursuing the truth,” said Weiss. “Trevor’s deep knowledge of geopolitics and history will be an incredible asset at CBS News, where he’ll quickly become an indispensable voice for audiences across all platforms.”

Phillips’ career spans television, business, and politics. He was appointed Officer of the Order of the British Empire in 1999 for his services to broadcast journalism. He received a knighthood in 2022 for his work in equality and human rights. In addition to serving as a broadcaster, Phillips has written regularly for the UK’s biggest newspapers, The Times, The Daily Mail, The Sun and The Sunday Times.

…Phillips began his television career as a researcher at London Weekend Television, later becoming head of current affairs. He presented “The London Programme,” a long-running ITV current affairs series, from 1987 to 1995. His work has also appeared on the BBC and Channel 4.

As for his views on Islam, holy moly, yeah. I completely see where the hoity-toity virtue-signaling producers of 60 Minutes would have a problem with this guy.

And I am DYING here.

In March of 2020, Sir Trevor, a Labor Party bigwig and ex-chair of the UK’s Equality and Human Rights Commission (!), was suspended from the party and investigated for being an ISLAMOPHOBE.

The Times newspaper reported the anti-racism campaigner is being investigated over past comments dating back years.

Mr Phillips, ex-chairman of the Equality and Human Rights Commission, said Labour was in danger of collapsing into a “brutish, authoritarian cult”.

Labour said it takes complaints about Islamophobia “extremely seriously”.

…Mr Phillips was among 24 public figures who wrote to the Guardian last year declaring their refusal to vote for Labour because of its association with anti-Semitism.

He could be expelled from the party for alleged prejudice against Muslims.

Mr Phillips has been suspended pending investigation over remarks, including expressing concerns about Pakistani Muslim men sexually abusing children in northern British towns, according to the Times.

It says the complaint also covers his comments about the failure of some Muslims to wear poppies for Remembrance Sunday and the sympathy shown by some in an opinion poll towards the “motives” of the Charlie Hebdo attackers.

Holy CRAP! He called Labour’s dystopian, Starmtrooper bent out before they ever got power back!

I ALREADY LOVE THIS GUY!!

And Sir Trevor Phillips was already fighting against an official state definition of ‘Islamophobia’ six years ago.

…Writing in the Times, Mr Phillips said it would be tragic if, at the very moment the country needed an effective opposition, the nation had to endure the spectacle of Labour collapsing into “a brutish authoritarian cult.”

He said he was a victim of Labour’s adoption of a definition of Islamophobia as a “kind of racism” hostile to “Muslimness”.

What Bari Weiss has done is hire a BLACK (!), BRITISH CONSERVATIVE  – whose views are KRYPTONITE to the entrenched, privileged, sclerotic progressives at 60 Minutes – to be the boss correspondent of the biggest bunch of flaming egotistical elitist gasbags on Earth.

There is not enough popcorn in the world to see me through this.
