A chaotic scene unfolded outside a busy Carlsbad venue when a security guard fired a taser directly into a man’s face at close range, leaving bystanders horrified as the incident quickly spread across social media.

Footage from the confrontation shows a shirtless man standing only inches from the bouncer before being struck and dropping to the ground in pain.

The disturbing footage captures the guard pulling out his stun gun, taking aim, and unleashing the high-voltage jolt with no hesitation.

Witnesses reported that the man fell immediately, writhing in pain as sparks flashed from the weapon.

The unsettling spectacle did not end there.

Onlookers rushed to check on the injured man, who was seen crawling on the sidewalk before emergency responders arrived.

The rapid response by police led to the arrest of the bouncer, identified as David Marquez, who was later escorted away in handcuffs.

Marquez, a 42-year-old San Marcos resident, now faces two felony charges. Police booked him on allegations of assault with a deadly weapon and assault with a stun gun.

The charges highlight the seriousness of what authorities are calling an excessive use of force by a private security employee.

According to police, the event occurred outside Park 101 on Carlsbad Boulevard around 8:30 p.m. Wednesday evening.

Statements from law enforcement indicate that Marquez used the weapon during an altercation that they are still working to fully understand.

“The investigation determined that during the incident, a security guard allegedly deployed a stun gun during the altercation,” the Carlsbad Police Department said in a statement.

“Officers arrested 42-year-old David Marquez on suspicion of assault with a deadly weapon and assault with a stun gun.”

The department added that officials are reviewing all available evidence and have not released additional details while the case remains active.

Medical teams from the Carlsbad Fire Department evaluated the victim and transported him to a local trauma center.

Though he is expected to recover, officials have not commented on the extent of his injuries.

Experts warn that taser shots to the head can lead to dangerous complications including potential brain trauma.

The establishment where the incident took place was quick to distance itself from the bouncer’s actions.

“The video is deeply disturbing, and what it shows does not reflect Park 101 or any of our establishments,” one of the venue’s co-owners told reporters.

“The safety of our guests has always been our highest priority.”

The venue added that Marquez no longer works for them.

“The individual involved is no longer employed at our property, and we are terminating our relationship with that security vendor,” the owners said in a prepared statement.

“We are fully cooperating with the Carlsbad Police Department and conducting our own internal review of how event security is selected, vetted, staffed, and trained.”

Local residents have expressed shock over how volatile nightlife security in California has become.

WATCH:

After years of rising street crime, many venues hired private guards to maintain order, but incidents like this have renewed concerns about training and use-of-force policies among third-party contractors.

Some observers noted that while law enforcement officers undergo constant oversight and certification requirements, private security guards often face limited scrutiny.

This disparity, critics argue, can lead to dangerous situations when power is placed in the hands of underqualified individuals.

The footage has circulated widely online, reigniting conversations about accountability in California’s private security industry.

The state has seen multiple instances of excessive force by bouncers and guards, often caught on cell phone video.

Despite public outrage, few meaningful reforms have been made to ensure better screening before these individuals are given authority over public safety.

The situation outside Park 101 offers another high-profile example of how rapidly a night out can turn violent in a state that has allowed too much chaos to fester in its cities.

It shines an unflattering light on the lack of oversight that continues to erode trust in both public safety and private security operations throughout California.

For now, police say their investigation continues.

As the case moves forward, the footage will likely play a central role in determining whether the bouncer’s decision to fire at such close range was not only reckless but criminally indefensible.

The public will be watching closely, expecting real accountability for an act so brazen it could have cost a man his life.
