Sen. Ron Johnson discussed the current U.S. campaign involving Iran during an exchange with commentator Charlie Hurt, outlining what he described as key objectives and conditions for success.

Hurt opened the discussion by asking, “Senator, just big picture. Where do you think we are in the course of this current campaign dealing with Iran?”

Johnson responded by describing the immediate focus of the campaign, stating, “Well, I think right now, the main objective is to degrade Iran’s ability to destroy targets of the within the region.”

He added, “And certainly degrade their ability to continue to clog up the Strait of Hormuz.”

Johnson said he believes the effort is also aimed at influencing how U.S. allies assess the situation.

He stated, “And I’m sure what President Trump is trying to do is degrade to a point where our allies will figure out it’s not as risky as as they’re assessing it is right now.”

He continued, “And they will come and start escorting ships so we can open up strait of Hormuz.”

He added, “I mean, that’s crucial we do.”

He emphasized the importance of continuing the campaign, stating, “So I think it’s also crucial that we can’t let left this job undone, leaving the Iranian regime standing, not completely weakened.”

He continued, “Not certainly threatened by the Iranian people.”

He added, “To have it taken over, I think, would be a mistake.”

Johnson pointed to reports about internal conditions in Iran, stating, “But the greatest hope I have there is reports I’m reading where Iranians themselves are calling in air strikes to their leaders.”

He added, “And leaders are running scared.”

He continued, “They’re hiding in tents.”

He said, “They don’t know where to run.”

He described the targeting of leadership within the Iranian system, stating, “I think President Trump’s probably right where we’re getting down to the third layer of leadership.”

He added, “Now, they’ve got a lot of layers.”

He continued, “They’ve got a lot of people in the IRGC, in the bass.”

Johnson also addressed the conduct of the regime, stating, “And these people are brutal.”

He added, “They executed 30 to 40,000 of their own citizens.”

He continued, “Just hung some young people, top flight wrestler.” He said, “I mean, it’s grotesque what these people are doing. That’s why we can’t allow them to stay in power.”

Hurt then asked about what would constitute success, stating, “Truly.”

He continued, “Well, if you wind up with a much degraded regime, but that degraded regime remains in power, and the Strait of Hormuz opens up.”

He asked, “Would that be considered a success? In your mind.”

Johnson responded by outlining conditions under which that scenario could be considered successful.

He said, “Probably as long as we retain the right and ability to continue to degrade further leadership.”

He added, “And make sure that they can never reconstitute their missile manufacturing capability.”

He continued, “Their drone capabilities.”

He concluded, “And never reconstitute their nuclear enrichment.”
