Caleb Williams’ connection with the Chicago Bears reached a new milestone when EA Sports announced Wednesday that he will appear on the cover of “Madden NFL 27.” The announcement marks the first time in Bears history that a player from the franchise will be featured as the game’s cover athlete.

Williams enters the 2026 season with a 90 overall rating. Speaking about the news, he said, “When I received the call from Madden, it was like my childhood dream was coming true. Being on the cover of ‘Madden NFL 27’ is a full-circle moment.”

He added that he grew up playing Madden and often imagined being part of the game. Williams continued, “I know fans are going to love what’s new in this year’s game, and I’m looking forward to getting my rating up to a 99 by the end of the season.”

Across his first season with Bears coach Ben Johnson, Williams threw for 3,942 yards and 27 touchdowns. Those numbers set a single-season franchise record for passing yards and helped lead the Bears to their first divisional title since 2018 along with their first playoff win in 15 years.

Here’s What They’re Not Telling You About Your Retirement

Williams’ debut season also included the Bears’ seven comeback victories — including playoffs — after trailing in the fourth quarter. The team earned the nickname “Cardiac Bears” during that run. Williams was described as one of the NFL’s most exciting quarterbacks.

The Standard Edition of “Madden NFL 27” will display Williams’ signature jump pass. The image captures his fourth-and-8 throw to Rome Odunze, remembered for taking place during the Bears’ playoff comeback against the Green Bay Packers. The background of the cover includes the Chicago skyline.

EA Sports will commemorate the 2025 NFL Moment of the Year on the Deluxe Edition cover. That moment was Williams’ 46-yard walk-off touchdown pass to DJ Moore in Week 16, which defeated Green Bay in overtime. The image portrays Williams performing his “Iceman” celebration. After releasing the pass at the start of overtime, he placed his hands in his muff as he watched Moore catch the touchdown, then rubbed his biceps as a nod to having “ice in his veins.”

Evan Dexter, EA Sports’ vice president of franchise strategy and marketing, praised Williams’ selection. “Caleb Williams is what a true face of the franchise looks like, the culmination of many moments in the Chicago Bears’ incredible history that has led them to their electric, generational quarterback,” Dexter said.

Dexter also discussed the goals of the upcoming game. “‘Madden NFL 27’ aims to put more of those critical moments and key management decisions, with meaningful consequences that echo across the NFL, in the hands of our players so that they can build a league that’s truly their own. Just like Caleb, the future of football in ‘Madden NFL 27’ is thrilling and more dynamic than ever before.”

The full release of “Madden NFL 27” is scheduled for August 13. The announcement adds another highlight to Williams’ early tenure with the Bears, pairing his on-field success with one of football’s most recognizable honors.

The unveiling also continues EA Sports’ emphasis on individual storytelling within the Madden franchise. The chosen cover moment celebrates Williams’ most memorable plays from his rookie year and the emotional connection fans witnessed during the Bears’ season.

Williams’ jump pass to Odunze and his overtime strike to Moore serve as the defining visuals tying the game to his rise with the Bears. Both covers showcase the connection between Chicago football and the player now representing the franchise on one of sports gaming’s most visible platforms.

For Williams, the cover announcement combines personal achievement and franchise recognition. The Bears’ return to postseason success aligned with his breakout performance, and the Madden honor reflects the growing spotlight on his career.

With a 90 overall rating at the start of the season, Williams has already placed himself among the sport’s most highly regarded young quarterbacks in the game’s universe. His stated goal of reaching a 99 rating by the end of the season places added attention on his next chapter with Chicago.

As EA Sports prepares for the August release, both versions of the game highlight the dramatic moments that defined the Bears’ season and Williams’ emergence as one of the central figures in the league’s storylines. The “Madden NFL 27” covers capture key sequences that Bears fans will recognize instantly, moments that established Williams’ early connection to both the city and its football legacy.
