WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW
  • Chris Rock compared institutionalized wokeness and cancel culture to the Salem witch hunts during an interview on The Daily podcast.
  • Rock argued that woke culture emphasizes punishment without forgiveness, using the Old Testament and New Testament as his analogy.
  • He said forgiveness does not require condoning abusive conduct and maintained that friends can reprimand one another.
  • Rock also credited cancel culture with giving more attention to people who previously might not have had a voice.
  • During his Misty press tour, Rock said Trump was right to call the news fake while stressing that he is not a fan.

Chris Rock is once again taking aim at wokeness, comparing the culture of public condemnation and cancellation to the Salem witch hunts.

The actor and comedian argued that movements created to expose wrongdoing can become destructive once they turn into institutions that must justify their continued existence, as reported by Breitbart.

Rock addressed the subject during a recent interview on The Daily podcast.

His remarks continued a line of criticism he previously pursued in his 2023 comedy special, Chris Rock: Selective Outrage.

This time, Rock described wokeness through a biblical comparison centered on punishment and forgiveness.

He suggested that the culture currently operates according to a rigid standard that leaves little room for anyone to recover after making a mistake.

“The problem with wokeness is we’re in the Old Testament right now,” he said. “And the Old Testament has no forgiveness. The Old Testament didn’t work. So they had to write a remix called the New Testament.”

Rock was also asked whether anything redeeming had emerged from the past decade of woke leftism. His response was far from upbeat, with the comedian warning that efforts can go badly after they become institutionalized.

He illustrated that argument by invoking the Salem witch hunts.

In Rock’s telling, even an undertaking that initially identifies genuine misconduct can eventually become corrupted when an established operation needs new targets and continuing reasons to exist.

“The Salem witch hunts. I’m sure the first three witches they caught were actually fucking witches,” Rock said.

“But then you open up a witch office, and now you’ve got to start lying.”

Rock continued the analogy with a blunt description of what happens when the supposed witch hunters develop institutional interests of their own.

“Now you’ve gotta fucking make s-hit up because you’ve got overhead. You’ve got to justify the witch hunters’ fucking pensions and shit.”

“It’s great to help those that need help. That is amazing. We need more of that. The problem is when you institutionalize it … Now you gotta start lying. Now you gotta f**king make shit up, cause you got overhead.”

His criticism of cancel culture did not amount to an argument that abusive conduct should simply be ignored.

Rock distinguished forgiveness from condoning wrongdoing, saying people can still criticize or reprimand those close to them.

It “doesn’t mean condoning abusive behavior. You can reprimand your friends,” he said.

Rock added that reprimanding friends is “also part of friendship,” framing criticism as something that can exist without permanently abandoning a person.

“If you’re only friends with your friends when they’re good, they’re not your friends,” he explained.

The remark placed loyalty and accountability alongside his broader appeal for forgiveness rather than relentless condemnation.

Despite his attacks on cancel culture, Rock acknowledged that its arrival brought at least one outcome he welcomed.

He said he was glad it began around 2014 because people who previously might not have had a voice received more attention.

The comedian has also been drawing notice during the press tour for his new film, Misty.

In another striking comment, he said President Donald Trump was right in describing the news media as filled with lies and fake news.

Rock made clear that his agreement on that issue did not mean he supported Trump more broadly. “I’m not a fan,” Rock said of Trump last week.

“But it’s weird when somebody gets one thing right, and the one thing almost clears them of all their other sins. The news is fake. He got that right.”

The comment added another provocative moment to a press tour already marked by Rock’s renewed assault on woke culture.
