WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW
  • Fareed Zakaria said the most acute homelessness problems are largely concentrated in blue cities and blue states.
  • He argued that New York City and Los Angeles spend heavily on homelessness, making insufficient spending an incomplete explanation.
  • Zakaria criticized policies that privilege homeless people’s rights over those of the other 99.5%.
  • He contrasted New York with Miami, Houston, and Dallas while pointing to housing construction as part of the difference.

CNN’s Fareed Zakaria delivered an unusually candid assessment during an appearance on Bill Maher’s HBO program “Real Time” this weekend. He said the country’s most acute homelessness problems are concentrated in blue cities and blue states, a point rarely heard on his own network.

Zakaria did not merely acknowledge that homelessness remains a serious American problem. He specifically identified cities governed by Democrats as the places suffering from the worst versions of the crisis.

“Let me say something that’s going to get me into trouble, which is, if you look at where you have the most acute homelessness problems, they are blue cities in blue states, to a large extent,” Zakaria said.

That acknowledgment cut against the sort of political deflection that often surrounds the issue. Rather than pointing toward conservative states or blaming a shortage of public spending alone, Zakaria focused attention on heavily Democratic cities already committing substantial amounts of money.

“The right tends to be very stingy about the money that it would take to solve these problems. But that’s not New York City , that’s not L.A. We’re spending crazy amounts of money on it,” he said.

Zakaria therefore argued that insufficient spending does not explain what is happening in New York City and Los Angeles. Those cities are already spending heavily, according to his remarks, yet their homelessness problems remain acute.

He also argued that another political and cultural factor is involved. Zakaria referred to “this other side to it,” which he described as “overprivileging the rights of the homeless over the rights of the other 99.5%.”

His argument placed the interests of the broader population directly into the discussion. In his view, certain cities have elevated the rights of homeless people above those of the overwhelming majority of residents who must live with the consequences.

Zakaria did not claim that every major American city faces an identical situation. Instead, he contrasted New York with cities including Miami, Houston, and Dallas, saying those places do not experience homelessness on the same scale.

“Miami does not have the kind of homelessness problem that New York has. Houston doesn’t, Dallas doesn’t,” he said.

The comparison matters because it challenges the idea that severe homelessness is simply an unavoidable feature of every large city. Zakaria’s examples showed that the pattern he described is not uniform across the country.

He attributed at least part of that difference to the ability of cities to construct housing and other buildings. According to Zakaria, the cities he cited are more effective at building, while New York and California struggle to produce housing of any kind.

“Part of it is that those places are much better at building stuff. One of the problems in a place like New York or in California is we just can’t build housing, of any kind, right? Affordable, homeless, whatever it is, and people don’t want it.”

That explanation connected the homelessness problem to resistance against construction. Zakaria said New York and California cannot build the necessary housing, whether it is affordable housing, housing intended for homeless people, or other forms of development.

His comments amounted to a blunt diagnosis of failures in some of America’s most heavily Democratic jurisdictions. Large expenditures have not solved the crisis, and political decisions concerning construction and the competing rights of residents remain central to his criticism.

The admission was striking precisely because it came from Zakaria on Maher’s program rather than from a conservative critic. For once, a prominent voice associated with CNN said plainly that the worst homelessness problems are found largely in Democrat run blue cities and states.

The broader criticism is that once beautiful American cities have been damaged by a problem their own leaders allowed to continue. Zakaria’s remarks reinforced that argument by pointing to spending, restrictions on building, and policies that prioritize homeless people over the other 99.5%.
