Cori Bush Gets Humiliated as Squad Comeback Bid Implodes in Missouri Primary [WATCH]

Former Rep. Cori Bush watched her attempted political comeback collapse Tuesday night, as Rep. Wesley Bell easily defeated her in the Democratic primary for Missouri’s 1st Congressional District, as reported by Trending Politics News.

The race was called within roughly 20 minutes of polls closing, with Decision Desk HQ and the Associated Press both declaring Bell the winner before the suspense had much time to pretend it existed.

Early returns showed Bell dominating the field with about 70.7 percent of the vote, while Bush trailed far behind at 25.8 percent with an estimated 31 percent of ballots counted.

Partial results from St. Louis County were even rougher for Bush, showing Bell with a wider advantage as the night began to take shape. Other candidates, including Alissa Murphy, Carl Harris Sr., and Carl Henderson, took only small shares of the vote.

The result marks a stinging rejection of Bush’s attempt to reclaim the seat she once held from January 2021 through January 2025. For a former member of the Squad, it was not exactly the triumphant return her allies had hoped to sell.

Bush first entered Congress after defeating longtime Democratic incumbent William Lacy Clay in the 2020 primary. Her win was celebrated by the progressive activist class as another victory for the far left wing that had already been reshaping Democratic politics in Washington.

Once in Congress, Bush served on the House Judiciary Committee and the Committee on Oversight and Reform, later known as Oversight and Accountability. She quickly became associated with the Squad, the group of hard-left House Democrats known for turning activist slogans into congressional talking points.

Bell first defeated Bush in the 2024 Democratic primary, when he was still serving as St. Louis County prosecuting attorney. In that race, Bell earned 51.12 percent of the vote, totaling 63,521 votes, while Bush received 45.65 percent, totaling 56,723 votes.

That earlier matchup was defined by massive outside spending, especially from groups focused on Israel policy. The United Democracy Project, a super PAC affiliated with the American Israel Public Affairs Committee, spent roughly $8.5 million to $9.3 million backing Bell or opposing Bush.

The contest became one of the most expensive House primaries on record, and Bush’s critics argued that her positions on Israel and other left-wing priorities had made her vulnerable. Her supporters blamed outside money, because naturally the progressive answer to losing an election is often to insist the voters were somehow not the real story.

Bush launched her comeback bid in October 2025, setting up a rematch with Bell and hoping to prove her political brand still had power in St. Louis. Instead, the early numbers suggested Bell was on track for a margin far larger than the one he posted in 2024.

Her campaign leaned heavily into familiar left-wing causes, including abolishing ICE and cutting the Pentagon. Those positions may thrill the activist seminar crowd, but they did not appear to produce a winning coalition in this heavily Democratic district.

Bush did pick up support from major progressive figures, including Sen. Bernie Sanders of Vermont. That endorsement brought national attention, though apparently not enough votes to keep her comeback from crashing into the pavement.

Bell, meanwhile, enjoyed support from House Democratic leadership, including Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries, along with the Congressional Black Caucus. He campaigned on his work in Congress, including efforts tied to disaster recovery after a tornado affected the St. Louis area in 2025.

Outside groups aligned with pro-Israel positions also supported Bell again, though at lower levels than in the 2024 contest. Even with less outside spending, Bell’s commanding lead showed that Bush’s problems with voters were not simply a matter of campaign finance complaints.

Missouri’s 1st District includes St. Louis and parts of St. Louis County, and it leans heavily Democratic. That means Bell’s primary victory makes another term in November all but certain.

For Bush, Tuesday night delivered a blunt political verdict. The Squad brand may still excite cable news panels and online activists, but in this Missouri rematch, voters chose the incumbent and left Bush’s comeback bid in pieces.
