Newsmax host Rob Finnerty and Michael Knowles argued that establishment Democrats are providing political cover for Democratic Socialists of America candidates, pointing to prominent Democrats who have described their party as a “big tent” while socialist candidates gain influence.

“Okay, the other part of this story is that Democrats, mainstream Democrats – I don’t even know if normal Democrats even exist in Washington anymore – but mainstream Democrats are covering for these DSA candidates, pretending that this is all like perfectly normal, the takeover of their party that’s happening,” Finnerty said.

“Chuck Schumer, Hakeem Jeffries, Elizabeth Warren, Nancy Pelosi, all of them are all allowing this to happen.”

The segment included clips of several Democrats discussing candidates and the ideological breadth of their party.

“El-Sayed has brought in new energy and new talent,” Chuck Schumer said.

“I said to myself, That’s my kind of man,” Elizabeth Warren said.

Schumer also defended the Democratic Party’s ideological range, saying, “We are a big tent party, and being a big tent party is a strength.”

Nancy Pelosi offered a similar assessment.

“I’m not worried about that at all. I think that we have a big tent that is the Democratic Party,” Pelosi said.

Andy Beshear also addressed the issue, saying, “I think the Democratic Party has to be a big tent party where people can have different ideas on how we solve a problem.”

Finnerty rejected the premise that DSA candidates simply represent another faction within that coalition.

“Right, but these people aren’t Democrats,” Finnerty said before asking Knowles why establishment Democrats were defending DSA candidates.

“Because they’re all the same. That that’s the big takeaway here,” Knowles responded.

“When they say they want a big tent party, they they want to have lots of different ideas, they don’t have different ideas.”

Knowles argued that establishment Democrats and politicians including Abdul El-Sayed and Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez primarily disagree over the degree to which policies should be pursued rather than their fundamental direction.

He contrasted that with disagreements within the Republican Party over tariffs, free trade, legal immigration and foreign intervention.

“That’s a real big tent party,” Knowles said.

“That creates its own problems and has its own strengths. But on the Democrat side, it’s all basically the same.”

Knowles argued that DSA candidates are receiving support because of their growing popularity relative to establishment Democrats.

“And so, for the slightly, barely more moderate establishment Democrats who agree on the substance of the issues with all of the socialists, the reason that they’re now giving cover to the DSA candidates is because the DSA is more popular than the Democrats in Congress,” Knowles said.

“So the DSA has effectively taken over the Democrat Party.”

Finnerty then played a clip of a DSA speaker discussing the organization’s broader vision for socialism.

“I really do want to emphasize that socialism is a vision for a future without capitalism. It is not just government does things,” the DSA speaker said.

“A future without capitalism,” Finnerty responded.

“The most successful free market economy in world history is America. Why are Democrats allowing their party to be taken over by that?”

Knowles argued that the ideological shift has been developing for years and said the left has long promoted a fundamental transformation of the country.

“Well, they do hate America, and I don’t say that just to throw bombs,” Knowles said.

“The DSA literally throws bombs, but I’m not saying that to be provocative. They tell you that.”

Knowles pointed to Barack Obama’s earlier call to “fundamentally transform” the country as part of what he characterized as a longstanding political movement rather than a recent development.

“This has been brewing for a very, very long time on the left, and nobody should be surprised by any of it,” Knowles said.

“I guess the only thing that’s shocking is now they’re being so open and explicit about it.”

Finnerty concluded by asking whether DSA-aligned candidates would reveal a more aggressive governing agenda if elected in November.

“I’ve just got a few seconds left, but but do you think the mask comes off if these people get elected in November? If Abdul El-Sayed gets elected, does the mask come off?” Finnerty asked.

“Not the literal mask because they’re all still living in COVID-land, that’s the secular keffiyeh now, but in terms of the figurative mask, yes, absolutely,” Knowles replied.

Knowles cited Abigail Spanberger as what he described as the model for Democratic candidates running as moderates before governing from the left.

“You run as a moderate, you try to keep your mouth shut as best you can, and then the minute you’re in office, you govern with the most radically leftist agenda we’ve ever seen,” Knowles said.
