A Florida sheriff’s deputy is getting grilled online after a viral body camera clip showed an incredible scene during what was supposed to be a routine traffic stop.

The deputy insisted he saw a driver texting on her phone with her right hand.

There was just one small problem.

The woman’s right arm ends at the elbow.

Here’s What They’re Not Telling You About Your Retirement

The incident unfolded in Lake Worth Beach in February when Palm Beach County resident Kathleen Thomas was pulled over and accused of holding a phone while driving.

The deputy, convinced he had caught her red-handed, began lecturing her about distracted driving.

Moments later, the stop transformed into one of the most jaw-dropping traffic stop videos ever to hit social media.

The footage opens with the deputy explaining that he saw Thomas holding a phone in her right hand. Calmly, she listened and then raised her right arm, showing that it ends at the forearm.

“So obviously not,” she told him with a laugh.

“So you want to just call this a day or…?”

Instead of backing off, the deputy tried a wild pivot.

“I do not want to call a day. You had a hand manipulator,” the deputy replied.

“I thought I saw your hand.”

Her bewildered chuckle said it all as she showed him again that she did not, in fact, have a right hand.

The deputy seemed to get flustered, muttering, “With the right hand, perhaps not,” and continued writing the ticket anyway.

That move would soon earn him the full fury of the internet.

Thomas uploaded the footage on TikTok, and within hours, the clip blew up across Instagram and X, amassing millions of views and a tidal wave of criticism toward the deputy’s stubborn insistence that he had seen something impossible.

Social media users were merciless. Many accused the officer of lacking common sense and even basic observation skills.

Others cracked jokes asking if the citation was for “using an imaginary phone.”

The scene where he asked her to swear “Hand to God” that she had no phone became a meme of its own once she held up her right arm to emphasize the obvious.

“Other hand to God,” the officer said, trying to cover his blunder as Thomas raised her left hand instead.

Even though it was clear as day the officer was mistaken, he was not ready to yield. He stayed fixated on his claim that he saw her with a phone.

The online reaction grew louder as viewers saw him double down instead of apologizing.

For many Floridians, the viral video became a case study in government arrogance that gets worse the longer a simple mistake drags out.

After the story reached the national level, the Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office issued a statement attempting to do damage control.

Public Information Officer Terri Barbera told Fox News Digital that the agency remained “committed to enforcing Florida traffic laws.”

She explained that the deputy made the stop based on what he “visually observed at the time,” but acknowledged that the citation was ultimately tossed out after reviewing the situation and the confusing way the state’s laws are worded in their citation software.

Barbera said, “After additional review of the Florida State Statutes involved and based upon the totality of the circumstances, specifically the lack of clarity on how violations are labeled in our citation software, the decision was ultimately made to dismiss based upon the difference in wording between Florida State Statute 316.305 and 316.306.”

In short, the department realized the case was more embarrassing than enforceable.

She added that deputies must make decisions “based on observations made in real time,” a phrase that many critics thought sounded more like an excuse than an explanation.

WATCH:

With modern body cameras and dashboard footage proving what really happened, “real time” seems like an excuse to avoid admitting error until the evidence goes viral.

Thomas, who goes by Katie online, came across as remarkably good-humored about the whole affair.

Her social media accounts showed she turned what could have been a frustrating episode into a laughing matter that exposed how robotic and rule-driven some local enforcement has become.

Millions of regular citizens seemed to share her feeling that law enforcement should have the humility to admit a mistake rather than bluff through it.

The department did not reveal whether the deputy faced any internal review or retraining after the incident.

Many viewers have demanded accountability, arguing that if an average citizen made a false accusation like that, the penalty would be severe.

Others saw the story as a snapshot of modern policing that leans too often on citations instead of common sense.

By the end of the clip, as the deputy’s credibility melted away on camera, the country got an unfiltered look at what happens when bureaucratic stubbornness meets viral video reality.

A simple traffic stop turned into a master class on how not to handle someone with a disability.

This viral traffic stop might fade in the endless scroll of social media, but its lesson will stick.

When a public servant doubles down instead of owning up, cameras have a way of telling the truth faster than paperwork ever could.

And if there is one thing Florida drivers learned this week, it is that facts, unlike traffic citations, do not get dismissed.
