President Donald Trump said he briefly considered naming the Gulf of America after himself before deciding against it, describing the idea during a weekend interview while emphasizing that he was joking about the suggestion, as reported by The New York Post.
Speaking on Fox News’ “Sunday Morning Futures,” Trump discussed the name change he implemented after returning to office and the reasoning behind it.
“Now, it’s called the Gulf of America, because of me. One of my little things that I did,” Trump, 79, said. “Why is it the Gulf of Mexico when we have 93% of the shoreline?”
He then described the idea of renaming it after himself. “I must tell you, I was thinking about calling it the ‘Gulf of Trump’ and I decided not to do it,” he said.

“It was going to be called the Gulf of Trump, and then I said, ‘You know, that’s not going to play too well.’”
“You know I’m kidding,” Trump added.

Data from the U.S. Geological Survey shows that the United States controls approximately 46% of the Gulf of Mexico’s shoreline, a figure lower than the percentage referenced during the interview.
Trump signed an executive action on his first day back in the White House last year to rename the “Gulf of Mexico” as the “Gulf of America.”

The change drew attention at the time, including a response from the White House directed at the Associated Press over its refusal to adopt the new terminology.
The president has previously discussed renaming other geographic locations.
Reports have indicated that he has also considered renaming the Strait of Hormuz, including suggesting it be called the “Strait of America” or named after himself.
The interview comments come amid ongoing developments tied to the Strait of Hormuz, a critical global shipping route through which roughly one-fifth of the world’s seaborne oil supply passes each year.
The region has been a focal point of U.S. policy in recent days, including actions announced by the administration in response to tensions involving Iran.
In a separate message posted on Truth Social early Saturday, Trump said the United States is preparing to export large quantities of oil and gas.
“Massive numbers of completely empty oil tankers, some of the largest anywhere in the World, are heading, right now, to the United States to load up with the best and ‘sweetest’ oil ([and] gas!) anywhere in the World,” he wrote.
“We have more oil than the next two largest oil economies combined – and higher quality. We are waiting for you. Quick turnaround!” the president added.
Trump has previously followed through on renaming efforts involving U.S. institutions.
Last August, he referenced the possibility of renaming the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts, stating at the time that “some people refer to it as the Trump-Kennedy Center, but we’re not prepared to do that quite yet.” By December, the rebranding had been implemented.
The administration also renamed the U.S. Institute of Peace as the Donald J. Trump Institute of Peace, reflecting a broader pattern of name changes tied to federal entities and locations.
The latest remarks highlight the president’s continued focus on naming conventions and branding initiatives tied to U.S. geography and institutions, while also intersecting with broader policy discussions involving energy production and international shipping routes.
