Donnie Wahlberg has opened up about what his former Blue Bloods co-star Tom Selleck really thinks of his new spinoff series Boston Blue.
Wahlberg, 56, and Selleck, 81, worked together as father and son on the hit police drama Blue Bloods from 2010 until the show’s conclusion in December of 2024.
Following its end, Wahlberg launched Boston Blue, which premiered in the fall of 2025 as a continuation of the show’s legacy.
In a recent conversation with US Weekly, Wahlberg revealed that Selleck is supportive of his new project.
Here’s What They’re Not Telling You About Your Retirement
“[With] Tom, when the time is right, I’m sure we’ll find something to do together [on the show],” he said. “Tom supported me doing this.”
Wahlberg added that Selleck “may want to play” his iconic character Frank Reagan again—or he “may not.” He explained that any decision about Selleck’s involvement would depend on “the timing, the situation and the script most of all.”

The actor and executive producer also shared that several familiar faces from Blue Bloods have already appeared on Boston Blue. “We’ve had other members of the cast of Blue Bloods on. It’s been incredible,” he said. “We had Grandpa Reagan. We have a few surprises before the season ends of other Reagans. It’s so great.”

Wahlberg admitted that having Selleck back would be “lovely” and “wonderful,” but insisted that it will only happen “when the time is right.” For now, he said, “Until then, onward.”
Selleck’s reaction comes after reports that he was “heartbroken” when Blue Bloods was canceled. The actor spent nearly a year urging CBS to keep the long-running series on air, pointing out its strong ratings in the Friday night time slot.
Speaking to TV Insider in October of 2024, Selleck said, “I’m kind of frustrated. During those last eight shows, I haven’t wanted to talk about an ending for Blue Bloods but about it still being wildly successful.”
He noted that Blue Bloods ranked high among network programs, saying, “In a Top 100 Shows of 2023-2024 (in total viewers, we were No. 9 out of 100), if you discount the three football shows, we’re No. 6!”

He continued, “My frustration is the show was always taken for granted because it performed from the get-go. So how do I feel? It’s going to take a long time to sort all of this out.” Selleck recalled the emotional impact of filming the final episode, saying, “I remember after the weekend [of the final episode’s shoot], I said, ‘I’ve got to get to bed early tonight because I have to do my dialogue for Monday.’ Well, there was no Monday. It’s just going to take a while.”
Despite his disappointment, Selleck is still said to be happy for Wahlberg and his continued success. An insider previously told the Daily Mail that while Selleck remains saddened by the cancellation, “there is no bad blood.”
According to the source, “Donnie recently approached him about starring, which is something he would like to do. But there aren’t any immediate plans for Tom to appear.”
Meanwhile, Wahlberg recently reflected on a heartfelt moment when Boston Blue was renewed for a second season. Speaking to People Magazine, he said he personally called each cast member to share the good news. “I did it, and every cast member got tears in their eyes. Every single one of them, and so did I,” he recalled.

He added that when he called his wife Jenny McCarthy to tell her about the renewal, “we shared a nice cry.” The couple has been married since 2014, and Wahlberg also serves as an executive producer on the series.
“Well, I’m an EP too, so I said as one of the EPs, I’d like to be the one to tell them. And everyone agreed,” he explained.
With Blue Bloods now part of TV history, Boston Blue continues to champion the themes that made its predecessor so beloved: law enforcement, family, and loyalty. Both shows have built a dedicated following for combining heartfelt storytelling with respect for public service.
Fans continue to hold out hope that Selleck will one day reprise his iconic role and reunite with Wahlberg on screen.
For now, Wahlberg’s comments make clear that their bond remains strong—and that Selleck’s support for the new chapter is unwavering.
