A national leader of the Democratic Socialists of America stumbled spectacularly when asked to explain what one of the organization’s favorite slogans actually means.

Megan Romer, one of the group’s two national cochairs, could not provide specifics about the familiar demand to tax the rich.

The awkward exchange unfolded Friday during an interview with New Yorker editor David Remnick.

What should have been comfortable territory for a senior socialist official instead became a painful demonstration of what happens when bumper sticker politics collides with basic follow up questions.

Remnick asked Romer to define the organization’s rhetoric in practical terms.

“Well, what does ‘taxing the hell out of them’ mean?’” he asked during an episode of The New Yorker Radio Hour titled “How Socialist Is the DSA? Megan Romer Explains”.

Romer responded with an uncomfortable laugh and no clear policy.

“Uh, yeah, you know, again, I don’t have like a solid…” she said, trailing off before producing anything resembling a tax rate, income threshold, or serious proposal.

Remnick did not let the socialist leader hide behind the slogan.

“But shouldn’t you?” he pressed, later asking, “shouldn’t you be more specific than ‘taxing the hell’ out of something? What exactly do you mean?”

That straightforward challenge appeared to catch Romer by surprise.

“Um, that’s a good question,” she replied, as though nobody in the organization had considered that its leaders might eventually be asked to explain the policies they loudly promote.

Romer then pivoted toward vague language about democracy and public spending.

“So again, it’s democracy, right?” she said, before adding, “And we have to look at what we have to spend and what we need. We don’t want to depend on the existence of millionaires because that means people are still getting exploited.”

The answer offered plenty of socialist jargon but precious little substance.

There was no tax rate, no definition of who qualifies as rich, no revenue estimate, and no explanation of how the government would replace the money when the targeted millionaires disappeared from the economy.

The clip quickly spread across social media, where critics treated the performance as an accidental advertisement against socialist leadership.

Media commentator Stephen L. Miller mocked Romer’s inability to answer what amounted to a polite request for details.

“When you realize you took $60,000 out in student loans and can’t answer a single friendly polite question,” Miller wrote on X.

He added, “They have never been challenged on any of this for their entire life, by anyone. An entire generation of privileged idiots.”

The interview became even more uncomfortable when Remnick moved from domestic economics to the Middle East.

He asked whether the DSA supported a two state solution for Israelis and Palestinians or a single binational state where both populations would live under one government.

“Our position is a free Palestine with a capital in Jerusalem, so I think that could be safely read as a one state solution,” Romer declared.

Her answer did not address what that vision would mean for roughly 10 million people currently living in Israel.

Remnick then tested whether Romer knew the history behind the conflict she was discussing with such confidence.

He asked whether she would have accepted the proposal considered during the Camp David Summit in 2000, one of the most famous American diplomatic efforts involving Israel and the Palestinians.

Once again, Romer had no informed answer ready.

“Good question,” she said, followed by the revealing admission, “I need to look at what the actual specifics there were, I don’t know them off the top of my head.”

Former President Bill Clinton brought Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Barak and Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat to the presidential retreat in Maryland for those negotiations.

The talks sought to establish a framework for a two state agreement, but the historic effort collapsed without a final peace deal.

For the DSA, the interview exposed a glaring gap between revolutionary confidence and command of the facts.

Romer appeared eager to endorse sweeping economic punishment and radical changes in the Middle East, yet struggled when asked to supply numbers, history, or even the most basic policy details.
