Podcaster and comedian Joe Rogan criticized arguments from progressive commentators calling for higher taxes on billionaires, questioning whether additional revenue would address government waste and fraud.

Rogan made the remarks during an interview with journalist and author Michael Shellenberger, where the two discussed governance in California and broader debates surrounding taxation and public spending.

During the conversation, Rogan pointed to what he described as ongoing concerns about the way California is governed, suggesting that state policies have driven residents and businesses to reconsider remaining there.

Here’s What They’re Not Telling You About Your Retirement

“California’s done such a terrible f**king job of governing their state. That place is so crazy. Like every time there’s some new law that they’re trying to push through, some new bill, and I’m like do they just want everyone to leave?” Rogan said.

The discussion also touched on the movement of wealthy individuals out of California.

Shellenberger referenced several high-profile billionaires who have reportedly relocated from the state, citing factors such as taxes and regulatory policies.

Rogan responded by shifting the conversation toward government accountability and how public funds are managed. He argued that before officials demand additional revenue through taxation, questions about existing spending should be addressed.

“The thing that drives me the most nuts is when these progressive talking heads start saying [billionaires] don’t want to pay their fair share. With the amount of waste and fraud, you don’t think there should be some accountability to how much f**king waste and fraud that has been clearly demonstrated? The solution is just to give more money? Oh and they can do it because they have it, so what you just give more money and now it’s $30 billion goes to homeless with no accountability,” Rogan said.

Rogan continued by questioning whether increased spending alone would lead to meaningful improvements in addressing social issues, including homelessness.

“What do you think this money is going to go where it’s actually going to help people and affect things in a positive way?” he said.

“There’s no indication that that’s the case, that the real problem is they just haven’t had enough money from the billionaires.”

Rogan concluded his remarks by criticizing the framing of the tax debate, saying the issue is often reduced to a simple claim that wealthy individuals are unwilling to contribute enough.

“That’s f**king ludicrous. That is ludicrous. It’s such a ludicrous and intellectually lazy framing of this whole discussion. To say oh they don’t want to pay their fair share. F**k you,” he emphasized.

“That’s not what’s going on here. What’s going on here, you have a completely incompetent government. That’s absolutely corrupt and they want more money.”
