The Treasury Department and FBI are making “substantial progress” in an ongoing investigation into who is funding Antifa, Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said in response to a question from Daily Caller reporter Reagan Reese.

Reese asked Bessent for an update on the probe, which began after the Treasury Department started working with the FBI in October to examine Antifa’s funding sources.

“Thank you, Reagan Reese with the Daily Caller. I want to ask you about Antifa. In October, the Treasury Department started working with the FBI to investigate who’s funding Antifa. Can you give us an update on that investigation? How close are you guys to finding out who’s funding it?” Reese asked.

Bessent said the investigation remains active and indicated that more information could become public in the coming weeks and months.

“It is ongoing. We made substantial progress, and I think in the weeks and months ahead, we’re going to have a lot to report,” Bessent said.

Bessent also pointed to a recent IRS change involving nonprofit disclosure requirements, saying the development had not received much attention.

“One thing that did go the underreported that I would point out to all of you is the IRS is now giving guidance on the Form 990 which nonprofits they have to file, and we are going to encourage or demand that nonprofits know their grant recipients, so if a grant recipient is violent, if they are suppressing people’s rights, then you are responsible for that, and I think that’s a very good first step,” Bessent said.

The Form 990 is filed by nonprofits, and Bessent said the IRS guidance is intended to require organizations to know where their grant money is going.

His comments tied the reporting requirement to accountability for nonprofits whose grant recipients engage in violence or suppress people’s rights.

Bessent framed the disclosure requirement as part of a broader effort to follow money connected to Antifa and to ensure that nonprofits cannot avoid responsibility for the conduct of entities they fund.

The exchange placed renewed attention on the Treasury Department’s work with the FBI and the administration’s efforts to identify financial networks behind Antifa-related activity.

Bessent did not name any specific organizations or grant recipients during the exchange, but said the investigation had advanced and that officials expect to have more to report.
