Fetterman Flames Newsom, Calls Out ‘Gross’ Smear Campaign Against Journalist Exposing CA Fraud [WATCH]

Sen. John Fetterman spoke out against a video released by California Gov. Gavin Newsom, calling it a smear while also agreeing with investor David Friedberg that fraud involving taxpayer dollars should be acknowledged and addressed.

Fetterman took issue with how Newsom portrayed journalist Nick Shirley, questioning why the video included what he described as a serious accusation.

“Why can’t you celebrate any journalist or any you know activist doing that,” Fetterman said.

He added, “Governor Newsom put out a disgusting video implying that he’s, you know, a pedophile.”

Fetterman said such claims go too far, regardless of political disagreement.

“Like, why you know, like, I mean, like, that’s like, kind of a smear,” he said. He added that criticism should not involve extreme accusations, stating, “I’m not going to call someone or imply that you’re, you’re a pedophile, or you’re, you know, going after kids in the gross ways.”

He emphasized that addressing waste and fraud should be a shared goal.

“Well, it’s like, Hey, shouldn’t we agree? Like, you know, eliminate all the waste,” Fetterman said.

He continued, “If it exists under, under my perfume, let’s eliminate it. Let’s call that what it is.”

Friedberg, speaking during the exchange, pointed to public frustration over reports of fraud involving taxpayer funds.

“But what’s crazy to me and so many other people that have seen these videos is to then see reactions from leaders in the Democratic party saying, we don’t have a problem,” Friedberg said.

He added that dismissing such concerns has fueled anger among voters. “When you see this fraud, it angers everyone,” Friedberg said.

He continued, “You’re spending money as a taxpayer, and then you’re giving the money away to fraudsters.”

Fetterman agreed that public frustration is justified when fraud is identified.

“It should. You should be angry,” he said.

He added that the issue is not limited to one political party.

“Fraud can happen on both sides, but when it’s identified, I don’t care if it’s in a democratic state, like we should all just acknowledge maybe there is a problem here.”

He warned that dismissing concerns about fraud could have political consequences.

“If you tell voters that you’re wrong, or, you know, hey, it’s no problem. There’s nothing here, then you lose,” Fetterman said.

Fetterman also suggested that broader policy debates, including border issues, could be affected by how leaders handle such concerns.

“If you want to turn that into, like the border, you know what Democrats is in 2023 you know, we do that at our own peril,” he said.
