A 72-year-old Georgia man is facing multiple charges after authorities say he drove through a group of cyclists during a weekly ride in Cherokee County, leaving at least one rider injured before leaving the scene, as reported by the New York Post.

Jerry Wayne Ross was arrested following the April 23 incident, which was captured on video and later obtained by Fox 5 Atlanta. According to reports, Ross was driving a Honda Pilot when he encountered a group of cyclists participating in a ride organized by the North Georgia Cycling Association.

The group had been traveling along Sugar Pike Road in Canton as part of a 32-mile Thursday evening ride when Ross approached from behind. Cyclists said the driver repeatedly used his horn for nearly two miles before the situation escalated.

“Just excessive. Didn’t let off the horn,” said Richard Collins, who was leading the group at the time.

Here’s What They’re Not Telling You About Your Retirement

Video footage recorded by one of the cyclists shows Ross’ vehicle advancing alongside the riders as they traveled double-wide along the rural roadway. Authorities said Ross is believed to have pulled up next to the leading group, where his passenger-side mirror struck one of the cyclists.

“I turned to my left to see it, at that moment, that vehicle was on my left leg,” Collins said.

Following the contact, several cyclists became entangled and crashed to the pavement. The vehicle then left the scene, according to investigators.

Emergency responders were called, and Collins was treated at the scene for injuries that included abrasions to his shoulder, elbow, and knee. He later sought further medical evaluation and was diagnosed with a fracture to his lower spine, according to his account.

Another cyclist involved in the incident was also treated at the scene.

The Cherokee County Sheriff’s Office located Ross shortly after the incident at a nearby residence. Deputies reported finding damage to his SUV consistent with a collision involving a bicycle.

According to Fox 5 Atlanta, Ross acknowledged encountering the cyclists but denied responsibility for the crash. He told authorities the riders were in the roadway and attributed the incident to their positioning.

Ross was taken into custody and charged with two counts of aggravated assault, aggressive driving, hit-and-run, and failing to maintain distance, according to jail records. He is currently being held at the Cherokee County Jail, with bond set at a total of $24,540.

The incident has drawn attention due to the video evidence and the circumstances described by those involved. The investigation remains ongoing as authorities review the footage and statements from witnesses.
