The last vestige of Kamala Harris’s 2024 presidential campaign reared its head Tuesday in an attempt to belittle President Donald Trump’s hosting of a state visit from Britain’s King Charles III, only to be subjected to internet mockery.
As the United States Army Old Guard Fife and Drum Corps performed on the White House‘s South Lawn, the X account @HQNewsNow (Headquarters) — formerly @KamalaHQ, the Harris campaign’s rapid response account — posted an image of the service member band, declaring, “There are currently Redcoats on the White House lawn to welcome the King of England.”
The Old Guard Fife and Drum Corps members have distinct, Revolutionary War-era, red uniforms — but are not the same as those of the infamous British Redcoats.
“The musicians of this unit recall the days of the American Revolution as they perform in uniforms patterned after those worn by the musicians of General George Washington’s Continental Army,” the official website for the Old Guard Fife and Drum Corps explains. “Military musicians of the period wore the reverse colors of the regiments to which they were assigned. The uniforms worn by the members of the Corps are dated circa 1784, and consist of black tricorn hats, white wigs, waistcoats, colonial coveralls, and distinct red regimental coats.” (RELATED: 250-Year-Old Artifact Sheds Light On Thomas Jefferson’s Monticello Beginnings)
In this case, because the soldiers in the regiment to which they were attached in the Continental Army wore blue uniforms with red facings, the Old Guard Fife and Drum Corps instead is adorned with red uniforms with blue facings. Meanwhile, the British Redcoats —as their name suggests — wore red uniforms but with facings of various colors, including blue, green, and yellow.

The historical botch job quickly drew mockery from a number of internet denizens. The team behind the post was even chastized by transgender activist Charlotte Clymer, a former communications staffer with the Human Rights Campaign.
“This is the Fife & Drum Corps from the U.S. Army’s 3rd U.S. Infantry Regiment. They perform at most official ceremonies and nearly all arrival ceremonies for foreign heads of state. I’m an Old Guard alum. This isn’t weird,” Clymer wrote. Republican Texas Rep. Pat Fallon blasted the “Headquarters” post: “Not surprised that Kamala’s HQ has no idea what it’s talking about either.”
Meanwhile, the popular @TodayinHistory account responded, “Do a little research. Read a book or two. It goes a long way.”

Former Republican Texas Sen. Ted Cruz staffer Steve Guest — now a GOP strategist — also jumped into the fray, “Team Kamala is a bunch of historically illiterate clowns.” While another account, with the name @spudchungus, lambasted the former Harris campaign account, “Do you not understand the official uniform of the Old Guard Fife and Drum Corps you absolute imbeciles?”

The Headquarters post was also tagged with a Community Note, which states, “These are U.S. Army Old Guard Fife and Drum Corps musicians wearing Revolutionary War-era uniforms patterned after Continental Army musicians—not British Redcoats.”
