Girl Scouts Push Back as Muslim Badge Programs Ignite a Fierce Backlash [WATCH]

The Girl Scouts of the USA is defending its religious policies after Islamic badge programs triggered a storm of criticism across social media. The dispute erupted after commentators highlighted activities involving mosque visits, Muslim prayer practices, Ramadan, and the pillars of Islam, as reported by Newsweek.

White House correspondent and War Room host Natalie Winters drew widespread attention to the issue Monday on X.

She said mosque programs operating in several states were incorporating prayer, hijab rules, Islamic education, Ramadan observances, and outreach through local Girl Scout activities.

The programs cited by Winters were reported in Sacramento, Naperville, Long Island, Virginia, Maryland, Brooklyn, San Diego, and other communities.

Critics quickly questioned why a national organization for girls appeared connected to programs teaching specific religious practices.

Girl Scouts responded by arguing that online criticism had misrepresented how the organization handles religion.

“There’s misinformation circulating online today about Girl Scouts and religion,” the organization said in a statement posted on social media.

The organization added, “Here are the facts: Girl Scouts is not a religious organization and does not teach religion.”

It said the group has welcomed members from different religious backgrounds for more than a century.

Girl Scouts explained that its national My Promise, My Faith pin allows participants to connect the Girl Scout Law with their personal beliefs.

Other religious patches, according to the organization, are created and administered by independent religious groups rather than the national Girl Scouts organization.

That explanation did not satisfy Winters, who accused Girl Scouts of hiding behind a carefully worded denial.

She argued that the organization had failed to identify any factual error in her reporting about the Islamic programs and their requirements.

“GSUSA has not identified one false sentence,” Winters wrote. She added, “Calling documented facts ‘misinformation’ is not a rebuttal.”

Winters also sharply criticized what she viewed as the contradiction of modern feminist institutions defending Islamic programming.

She pointed to the treatment of women under Islamist governments while questioning why American organizations were so eager to incorporate Islamic practices into programs serving young girls.

The controversy centers on religious recognition awards associated with the Islamic Committee on Girl Scouting.

That organization offers medals and other recognitions for Muslim Girl Scouts who complete activities connected to Islamic belief, worship, history, and culture.

Programs discussed online include patches and activities focused on Ramadan, Hajj, Jumaa, Muslim prayer, and the pillars of Islam.

Some requirements reportedly involve visiting a mosque, studying religious customs, or learning how Muslims practice their faith.

Girl Scouts maintains that it neither creates nor directly administers those awards.

Its position is that families and local troops may voluntarily participate in religious programs developed by outside organizations, with similar arrangements available to Christian, Jewish, Hindu, Buddhist, and other religious communities.

The Council on American Islamic Relations defended the programs and accused critics of manufacturing outrage around Muslim children.

Robert S. McCaw, the group’s government affairs director, said Muslim scouting awards fit within a broader framework that has recognized religious participation for decades.

McCaw argued that Muslim recognitions are not a special exception and should be treated like comparable awards offered through other religious groups.

That defense, however, does not erase the question raised by critics about where cultural recognition ends, and direct religious instruction begins.

Supporters say the programs help girls connect scouting with the beliefs practiced by their families and communities.

Critics counter that mosque visits, prayer education, and lessons about religious obligations go well beyond casual cultural awareness, regardless of which outside group writes the requirements.

The dispute reflects a larger national argument over how schools, youth organizations, and nonprofit groups introduce religion to children.

As institutions embrace inclusion as their favorite shield against criticism, parents and the public are increasingly asking who designed the programs, what children are taught, and whether the explanations match the reality.

Girl Scouts closed its public response by declaring, “Girl Scouts is proudly for every girl.”

The online backlash suggests many Americans still want a more direct answer about whether being open to every girl also requires hosting programs that teach the practices of every religion.
