Commentator Britt Hughes is raising concerns about what she describes as a lack of ideological balance on Google News, pointing to a February analysis that examined the platform’s top morning stories.

Hughes compared the findings to earlier criticism of another major platform before turning to Google’s results.

“Do you remember when I told you that Apple News had gone three straight months without featuring a single article from a conservative news outlet in its top stories?” Hughes said.

She then shifted to Google’s performance during the same type of review period.

“Well now they can hold Google’s beer,” Hughes said.

Citing data compiled by the Media Research Center using classifications from the nonpartisan firm AllSides, Hughes outlined the share of content attributed to right-leaning outlets.

“Only 2% of Google’s top morning articles in the month of February were from a right leaning news site,” Hughes said.

She described the remainder of the coverage as dominated by other viewpoints.

“The vast majority of the rest all from left wing outlets,” Hughes said.

According to the review, 487 articles were analyzed from Google News’ top morning stories during February.

“Of the 487 articles Google featured in its top morning stories in February that we looked at, only 11 were from right leaning sources,” Hughes said.

Hughes also addressed which outlets were included in that small percentage.

“Oh, and those sources, it included the British Daily Mail and the anti Trump outlet, the bulwark. So count that how you will,” Hughes said.

The analysis further indicated that right-leaning outlets were not represented at all on several days during the month.

“In fact, Google News featured zero articles from right leaning news outlets in 17 days out of the month of February,” Hughes said.

She noted that when such outlets did appear, the subject matter was often not focused on major political issues.

“Those articles tended to be about things like tennis and weight loss medications,” Hughes said.

Hughes contrasted that with coverage of international topics.

“But when it came to things like Middle Eastern politics, Google News featured articles from Al Jazeera more than they did from the American right,” Hughes said.

She also referenced the scale of the platform in discussing the potential impact of its content curation.

“This is one of the most widely used news apps in the entire world, with over 280 million users and generating more than 24 billion clicks per month,” Hughes said.

Hughes argued that the distribution of sources has broader implications for public perception.

“So when they overwhelmingly push left wing views and ignore any conservative counterpoint, they’re skewing public opinion,” Hughes said.

She added that editorial decisions on the platform influence what users see and what they do not.

“They’re picking and choosing what information people consume and what they never get to see, and they’re doing it on purpose,” Hughes said.

Hughes concluded by connecting the findings to broader political trends.

“So the next time you wonder why so many people seem to be drunk on the left wing Kool Aid, this is why,” Hughes said.

The Media Research Center’s analysis relied on AllSides to categorize outlets by political leaning.

The study reviewed hundreds of articles featured in Google News’ morning selections across the month of February.

Google News aggregates content from a wide range of publishers, using algorithmic systems to determine which stories are most prominently displayed.

The platform reaches a large global audience and plays a significant role in how users access daily news coverage.
