Heated exchanges erupted on the Illinois House floor Wednesday as state lawmakers debated the participation of transgender athletes in girls’ sports following national backlash over a recent track meet in Naperville, as reported by Fox News.
The incident has reignited the debate over fairness in women’s athletics and the role of state and federal oversight.
The dispute stems from a recent high school track meet in Naperville, where a biological male identifying as female won a girls’ race, triggering widespread criticism.

During the floor session, Democrat Rep. Kelly Cassidy of Chicago accused her Republican colleagues of focusing inappropriately on minors.
“My colleagues on the other side of the aisle feel the need to share their obsession with children’s genitalia once again.”
The remark drew an immediate rebuttal from GOP Rep. Blaine Wilhour of Southern Illinois, who pointed to the larger issue of fairness in competition and the long-term consequences of gender transition policies.
“These folks up here accuse people of being obsessed with kids’ genitalia because they have the audacity to believe that boys should not be competing in girls’ sports,” Wilhour said.
“There is only one party, the Democrat Party, that is supporting and encouraging minor children to use life-altering and often irreversible hormone blockers. It’s your party that’s supporting the chopping off the genitals of confused and exploited minor children. So spare me the fake outrage.”
Letting boys compete in girls’ sports isn’t “compassion,” @Naperville203 — it’s exploitation. It’s abuse. It’s disgusting.@realDonaldTrump should freeze every cent of federal funding until schools protect actual girls. Enough is enough.@Awake_IL @Riley_Gaines… pic.twitter.com/T0isIhX0MA

Wilhour cited the Naperville meet as a violation of Title IX and called the situation abusive to female athletes.
Rep. Anna Stava-Murray, a Democrat representing Naperville, defended the transgender athlete involved. “We have adults, including adults on the House floor, who want to take a moment that that child trained for and use it as a political talking point,” she said.
“That’s disgusting, you should be ashamed of yourselves.”
Republican Rep. Adam Niemerg warned that the state risks losing federal funding under President Donald Trump’s executive order prohibiting biological males from participating in girls’ sports.
“This nonsense has to stop,” Niemerg said.
“You want federal dollars? Then stop embracing policies that 90 or 95% of the people oppose.”
He also called out the media for what he described as intentional suppression of the issue. “Ask the governor directly, press him on this issue, do your jobs, and stop lying about what is going on here in Illinois.”
The controversy extends beyond Naperville. The U.S. Department of Education is currently investigating Deerfield Public Schools District 109 after reports surfaced in March that middle school girls were forced to change in front of a biological male in the girls’ locker room.
Meanwhile, the Illinois High School Association (IHSA) reaffirmed that transgender athletes will continue to compete based on gender identity, citing directives from the Illinois Attorney General and Department of Human Rights.
U.S. Rep. Mary Miller, R-Ill., has sent multiple letters to the Department of Justice and Department of Education requesting federal intervention.
Her latest letter calls on Education Secretary Linda McMahon and Attorney General Pam Bondi to investigate the Naperville event and consider cutting federal education funding to Illinois.
Former Chicago Bears linebacker Brian Urlacher also weighed in, saying, “If I had a daughter who had to be forced to play against a man, I would not be okay with it and I would raise hell about it.”
