GOP’s Midterm Convention: Narrative Changer?

GOP’s Midterm Convention: Narrative Changer?

Tonight, the RNC and Donald Trump will launch a grand experiment in American politics. Republicans will kick off a two-day midterm convention, an innovation in a political system that may be the most honest reckoning of what conventions actually are in a very long time. It has two purposes, but the big dice roll is whether a two-day media event can recast the narrative of a midterm cycle.

Fortunately for Republicans, Democrats have given them plenty of assistance on that objective. And in more ways than one.

First, though, Damian Paletta offers this curtain-raiser on the convention itself for the Wall Street Journal. After the obligatory ‘Welcome to Dallas’ and coverage notes, Paletta breaks out the major events scheduled for the next two days. Note well that Trump himself will offer speeches on both nights, a recognition of his role in the party as well as his push for the convention itself:

  • Trump: Eleven years after he first rode down the golden escalator, Trump is still the center of gravity in the Republican Party. Even with poor poll numbers, he is the most powerful figure in the party. Trump will give the keynote address Wednesday and then the closing remarks Thursday as the convention works to put him on full display. Vice President JD Vance will speak Thursday before Trump.
  • Democratic divisions: The GOP is expected to play up the leftward lunge that a number of Democratic candidates have made during the primary season. They will attempt to paint the Democrats as dangerous and out of step with mainstream America. Winning this argument could be key to the GOP success in November. Democrats will be stirring the pot, though. Illinois Gov. JB Pritzker, a potential 2028 presidential candidate for the Democrats, will be speaking in Dallas on Wednesday not far from the big convention.

First off, it’s worth discussing the entire format. The GOP may be doing some party business in Dallas, but this is not a “convention” in the traditional sense of a presidential nominating process. Of course, the quadrennial conventions stopped being about that process quite a long time ago, too. The last open convention where a nomination was even arguably at risk was the 1984 Democrat convention, where Walter Mondale narrowly avoided an open convention in the final days of the primaries. (Republicans had a real open convention in 1976.)

Democrats stripped the mask off in 2024. Faced with an actual nominating crisis weeks before their convention, with Joe Biden’s senility exposed on national TV, the party had an obvious mechanism to choose another nominee: its “nominating convention” in mid-August. Rather than give delegates their opportunity to perform the nominal duty of that role, party leaders instead anointed Kamala Harris as the nominee and closed ranks to prevent a floor fight at their convention. It made very clear that at least one major party saw its convention as nothing more than a messaging platform, and its delegates as nothing more than accessories.

So why not do this in the midterms too? It’s a smart play, although it certainly will cost a few million dollars to stage it.

It’s especially smart for Trump. Normally, midterms are referenda on the current president, and Trump is not exactly at his popular peak at the moment. Trump is gambling that he can turn the “Democratic divisions” narrative into the major storyline of the midterms with two days of pounding his opponents as radicals and Marxists.

And this is where Democrats have made it easy, because they nominated radicals and Marxists for House and Senate seats. As I have written repeatedly, this isn’t a Red Scare – it’s a Code Red. Outright Marxists and barely-crypto-Marxists are running for the US Senate, House, and gubernatorial seats in states like Florida, Michigan, Maine, Wisconsin, and Texas. The GOP needs to nationalize those races and force all other Democrats to answer for their party’s radical turn, and a two-night national convention provides a short-cut to implementing that Akin Strategy in every contest.

Moreover, Democrats seem to have been caught with their pants down. Pritzker giving a speech in Dallas is hardly an effective counterprogramming strategy against a massive media event on the scale of the GOP’s midterm convention. James Talarico is supposedly doing an event tonight or tomorrow in an attempt to distract people from Dallas, too, which again exposes a lack of scale in Democrat strategic thinking. They might have done better to just hunker down for a couple of days and pretend it wasn’t happening; these responses are not only weak, they project weakness. And Talarico himself is one of the more extreme nominees that will get lots of attention from this convention tonight and tomorrow, too.

Will it work? Again, it’s a gamble, but given the stakes, it’s a relatively cheap gamble. The convention will allow Republicans to boost their esprit de corps ahead of the political battles ahead, which helps even if the narratives don’t shift as planned. The real question will be whether Republicans have the gastric fortitude to keep the focus on Democrats’ embrace of radical Marxism, and whether voters recognize its dangers. On that point, they can’t claim not to have been warned if Republicans follow through properly.

We will live blog both nights of the convention here at Hot Air, with all of our writers (and perhaps our contributors) on hand. Our live blog will begin at 7 PM ET, so join us for the ride!

Editor’s Note: The 2026 Midterms will determine the fate of President Trump’s America First agenda. Republicans must maintain control of both chambers of Congress.
