The House passed a resolution condemning socialism Tuesday evening, forcing lawmakers to declare where they stand on an ideology with a long record of misery.

The measure cleared the chamber 220 to 192, with every opposing vote coming from Democrats.

House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries joined Minority Whip Katherine Clark and Democratic Caucus Chairman Pete Aguilar in voting no.

Democratic Representatives Maggie Goodlander and Chrissy Houlahan voted present rather than taking a firm position.

Republican Study Committee Chairman August Pfluger told Fox News Digital, “Socialism has failed everywhere it’s been tried without exception. It’s a dangerous ideology that creates misery for the very people it claims to help,” offering a blunt summary of the Republican case.

Representative Jeff Crank of Colorado, who led the resolution, said the vote gave Americans a clear look at where lawmakers stand.

“They can certainly be critical, but it’s just a quick choice for the American people to see where people stand on this stuff,” Crank said.

Democrats dismissed the resolution as symbolic theater and argued that Republicans should focus on grocery and gasoline prices.

That complaint dodged the obvious point, since socialist policies built around government control and runaway spending directly affect household costs.

The five Republicans who opposed the procedural rule were Pete Sessions, Chip Roy, Ralph Norman, Clay Higgins, and Andy Harris.

Their dispute concerned leadership’s handling of a short term government funding plan, not the resolution condemning socialism or the other measures scheduled for debate.

Those conservatives objected after the Senate changed the original House funding bill, adding provisions involving hemp products and federal grants.

Golden also had a practical interest because failure of the rule would have stalled his legislation protecting portions of the American lobster and crab fishing industries.

Golden is not seeking reelection, while Gluesenkamp Perez remains one of the most vulnerable Democrats in Congress.
