New York Gov. Kathy Hochul’s attempt to energize Buffalo Bills fans during the ribbon-cutting ceremony for the team’s new stadium drew attention after multiple efforts to lead a crowd chant received little response, as reported by Fox News.

The Buffalo Bills officially celebrated the opening of their new stadium this week after years of playing home games at the original Highmark Stadium.

The ceremony in Orchard Park, New York, featured remarks from several prominent figures connected to the franchise, including Bills owner Terry Pegula and Mary Wilson, the wife of the late former owner Ralph Wilson.

Hochul also addressed attendees during the June 23 event, wearing a Buffalo Bills hat and clothing in the team’s colors as she took the stage before the assembled crowd.

She opened her remarks by attempting to rally those in attendance, saying, “Alright, let’s get this party started, let’s go!” The response from the audience appeared limited.

The governor then made another effort to encourage crowd participation.

“Buffalo, let’s go!” Hochul shouted while attempting to start a call-and-response chant. She pointed toward different sections of the audience in an effort to get fans involved, but the response remained subdued.

After the crowd did not join in, Hochul acknowledged the lack of enthusiasm.

“Alright, seriously? You want to win a championship season with that kind of enthusiasm? Men and women of labor, you know what I’m talking about,” she said before trying once more to start a chant.

Her second attempt also received little response from those attending the ceremony.

“We gotta give this place some good karma, right?” Hochul then said while referring to the Bills’ new stadium.

Video clips of the exchange quickly circulated online following the event, with many social media users commenting on the governor’s unsuccessful attempts to generate excitement from the audience.

The ribbon-cutting ceremony marked a significant milestone for the Bills organization as construction nears completion on the team’s new home.

The stadium carries a reported construction cost of approximately $2.1 billion and will seat roughly 60,000 fans when it opens for regular use.

According to Bill’s Senior Vice President of Design and Stadium Operations, Frank Cravotta, the stadium is 99.75% complete.

The Bills are scheduled to officially welcome fans into the facility on Aug. 8 with the “Return of the Blue & Red” training camp practice.

The venue incorporates several features designed specifically for Western New York’s winter climate.

Stadium architects Populous installed underground heating coils beneath the natural-grass playing surface to help prevent freezing temperatures from damaging the field.

The stadium also features specialized lighting systems designed to promote healthy grass growth throughout the season.

Additional weather-related features include a snow-melt system and a canopy intended to reduce wind inside the stadium, providing a more comfortable experience for fans during Buffalo’s cold-weather games.

The new facility replaces the original Highmark Stadium, which served as the Bills’ home for decades.

The ribbon-cutting ceremony brought together team officials, community leaders, and invited guests to celebrate the completion of one of the NFL’s newest venues ahead of the 2026 season.

While much of the event focused on the stadium’s completion and the Bills’ future in Western New York, Hochul’s unsuccessful efforts to lead chants from the stage became one of the most widely discussed moments from the ceremony after video of the exchange spread across social media.
