An illegal alien is in federal custody following a hit-and-run crash that killed a Fort Bend County, Texas, sheriff’s deputy, according to federal and local authorities.

Dennis Arguello-Acosta was taken into custody by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents on March 14 in connection with the death of Deputy Kenneth Lewis, officials said.

Investigators allege Arguello-Acosta struck Lewis on February 21 and fled the scene.

Lewis, a Fort Bend County sheriff’s deputy, was on duty at the time of the incident.

According to investigators, he had stopped to assist drivers involved in a minor crash when he was hit by a vehicle allegedly driven by Arguello-Acosta.

Authorities said Lewis was wearing his sheriff’s uniform when the crash occurred. He was transported to a nearby hospital, where he later died from his injuries.

The case prompted a multi-agency response as law enforcement worked to identify and locate the suspect.

The Federal Bureau of Investigation joined local authorities in the search for the driver who fled after the crash.

Federal officials confirmed that ICE took Arguello-Acosta into custody to prevent his release while the case proceeds.

“Deputy Kenneth Lewis served his community honorably as a law enforcement officer — and he would still be with us today if it were not for this criminal illegal alien who should’ve never been in our country in the first place,” said Department of Homeland Security spokesperson Lauren Bis in a statement.

Bis also addressed the reason for ICE’s involvement in the case, stating, “ICE has arrested Arguello-Acosta to ensure that he is not free to roam on our streets and threaten public safety.”

She added, “Under President Trump, criminal illegal aliens are not welcome in the U.S.”

Officials said Arguello-Acosta is currently being held in ICE custody.

Authorities indicated that he could soon face additional charges at the state level related to the incident.

The investigation remains ongoing as officials continue to review evidence connected to the crash.

Law enforcement agencies have not released further details regarding the timeline of potential charges or court proceedings.

Deputy Lewis’ death has drawn attention to the circumstances surrounding the crash and the subsequent search for the suspect.

Authorities have not disclosed additional information about the events leading up to the collision beyond what investigators have already stated.

Federal and local officials have emphasized coordination between agencies in locating and apprehending the suspect following the incident.

ICE officials reiterated that the agency’s actions were taken to ensure public safety and to maintain custody of Arguello-Acosta as legal proceedings move forward.

Further updates are expected as prosecutors determine next steps in the case.
