Indicted Democratic Rep. Sheila Cherfilus-McCormick has resigned from Congress as the House Ethics Committee moved toward recommending disciplinary action, and Republicans are prepared to push for a full House vote on her expulsion, as reported by The Gateway Pundit.
Cherfilus-McCormick, who represented Florida’s 20th Congressional District, stepped down effective immediately, according to a statement read into the congressional record as the committee convened Tuesday.
The Florida Democrat is facing a 15-count federal indictment tied to allegations that she improperly obtained more than $5 million in Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) disaster relief funds.

Prosecutors allege the funds were routed through her family’s healthcare company, Trinity Health Care Services, and used for personal benefit as well as contributions to her 2021 congressional campaign.

If convicted on the charges, Cherfilus-McCormick could face more than 50 years in prison.
In her resignation statement, she criticized the process surrounding the Ethics Committee’s review and maintained her innocence.
“This was not a fair process. The Ethics Committee refused my new attorney’s reasonable request for time to prepare my defense. By going forward with this process while a criminal indictment is pending, the Committee prevented me from defending myself. I will not stand by and pretend that this has been anything other than a witch hunt. I simply cannot stand by and allow my due process rights to be trampled on, and my good name to be tarnished.”
“Rather than play these political games, I choose to step away so that I can devote my time to fighting for my neighbors in Florida’s 20th district. I hereby resign from the 119th Congress, effective immediately.”

“But let me say this plainly: we should be very careful about the precedent we are setting. In this country, we do not punish people before due process is complete. We do not allow allegations alone to override the will of the people. That is a dangerous path, and one that should concern every American, regardless of party.”
“To my constituents, it has been the honor of my life fighting for you in the U.S. House of Representatives. Thank you for standing with me and fighting alongside me. This fight is far from over.”
BREAKING — IT’S OFFICIAL: Democrat Rep. Sheila Cherfilus-McCormick has RESIGNED from Congress

Following her resignation, House Ethics Committee Chairman Michael Guest stated that the panel no longer had jurisdiction over the matter and would not proceed with sanctions.
Prior to stepping down, Cherfilus-McCormick had said she did not plan to resign.
“For those asking whether I plan to resign, the answer is no,” she previously told Fox News.
“This is not the time to abandon the district, not when they, too, are fighting for their future.”
A bipartisan panel had found her responsible for 25 ethics violations in March. The Department of Justice indictment, filed in November, alleges that Cherfilus-McCormick and co-defendants, including her brother, received a $5 million overpayment from FEMA for COVID-19 vaccination staffing services.
Instead of returning the funds, prosecutors claim the money was laundered, used for personal expenses, and funneled into her campaign through straw donors while false tax returns were filed.
Pam Bondi addressed the charges in a statement.
“Using disaster relief funds for self-enrichment is a particularly selfish, cynical crime,” Bondi said.
“No one is above the law, least of all powerful people who rob taxpayers for personal gain. We will follow the facts in this case and deliver justice.”
Republican Rep. Greg Steube had already introduced a resolution to expel Cherfilus-McCormick and indicated he would pursue a floor vote regardless of the committee’s recommendation. Expulsion from the House requires a two-thirds majority vote.
Some Democrats signaled openness to that outcome. Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez said she would support expulsion if Cherfilus-McCormick did not resign, while House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries stated Democrats would “follow the facts.” The Congressional Black Caucus had not taken a unified public position.
Cherfilus-McCormick has denied the allegations against her, previously calling the case an “unjust, baseless, sham indictment” and saying she looks forward to defending herself in court.
Her criminal trial, originally scheduled for this month, has been delayed until February 2027.
