Republican vice presidential nominee JD Vance took a swipe at Democratic presidential nominee Kamala Harris during a campaign event in Traverse City, Michigan.
Vance, while speaking to a group of supporters, referenced Harris’ frequent mention of her middle-class upbringing, a talking point she often emphasizes in her own public speeches.
“I grew up in a working-class family, and I understand what it takes to stand up for the middle class,” Vance said. “When the Democrats – when Kamala Harris – talk about how they stand for working people, they’re not telling the truth. They’re lying to you.”

Vance continued his remarks by criticizing the policies of the Biden-Harris administration during the COVID-19 pandemic, particularly how vaccine mandates impacted American workers. “Remember when nurses and others lost their jobs because they refused to take the COVID shot? I believe if you want to take the shot, take the shot. But it’s disgraceful for Kamala Harris to claim she stands for the working man when her administration fired millions of American workers for not complying with her mandates.”
Michigan is a key battleground state in the upcoming election, with both former President Trump and down-ballot candidates like former Rep. Mike Rogers vying for important wins.
Vance praised Rogers, who is running for a U.S. Senate seat, before shifting his focus back to Harris.
“I don’t know if you’ve seen the news, but Kamala Harris has decided to give her first solo national interview,” Vance said. “I’ve watched some of these interviews, and every time she answers a question, I think we gain about 100,000 more votes for me and Donald Trump.”
Vance went on to mock Harris for what he described as her tendency to evade specifics in addressing critical issues like inflation and border security. “When asked what her plan is to solve inflation, Harris talks about growing up in a middle-class family in Berkeley, California,” Vance said. “What does that have to do with lowering inflation?”
He also accused Harris of being vague when discussing global conflicts, saying, “They ask her about the administration’s role in causing these conflicts, and she talks about working at McDonald’s as a teenager.”
Vance concluded his critique by asserting that Harris has done little during her time as vice president. “What has Kamala Harris done for the American people? We don’t know because she hasn’t done anything. Kamala Harris is why we have sky-high inflation, why groceries and housing are unaffordable, why the world is at war, and why our border is wide open.”
He wrapped up his speech with a blunt message aimed at Harris: “Kamala Harris, you want a promotion? The message from Michigan is clear: You’re fired. Go back to San Francisco where you belong.”
Michigan, a critical swing state, played a decisive role in both the 2016 and 2020 presidential elections.
Donald Trump narrowly won the state in 2016, breaking the Democrats’ decades-long hold, while Joe Biden narrowly reclaimed it in 2020.
Vance’s remarks in Michigan underscore the state’s importance to both parties in the upcoming election.
