A suspect accused of attacking a parking attendant in downtown San Diego was taken into custody after a police K-9 unit was deployed during a confrontation captured on video, authorities said, as reported by The New York Post.

The incident began around 3:42 p.m. Sunday near K Street and 13th Street in a parking lot identified as the Tailgate Padres Parking Lot, according to the San Diego Police Department.

Investigators said a 25-year-old parking attendant was sitting on an electrical box when the suspect approached and allegedly struck him twice in the head using a broken wooden cane handle.

The victim sustained two head lacerations and was transported to UCSD Hospital. Authorities said his injuries were not considered life-threatening.

Police later located the suspect, identified as 20-year-old Lathapoun Keovongsa, near Park Boulevard. Officers said he was still armed at the time, holding what they described as a wooden stick measuring approximately six feet in length.

Video of the encounter shows officers forming a perimeter on a sidewalk while repeatedly ordering Keovongsa to drop the weapon.

The suspect appears to move within the perimeter while continuing to hold the stick and refusing commands.

Officers initially attempted to subdue Keovongsa using nonlethal force. Footage shows multiple rounds being fired, believed to be bean-bag rounds or similar less-lethal projectiles.

Despite at least three shots, the suspect remained standing and continued to ignore police instructions.

After those efforts did not bring the situation under control, officers escalated their response. A K-9 unit was released, and the dog ran toward Keovongsa, making contact and knocking him off balance.

The K-9 latched onto the suspect’s arm as officers moved in and forced him to the ground. Officers then placed Keovongsa into custody, according to a report by Fox San Diego.

Authorities said the suspect was bitten on the arm during the takedown. No additional details were provided about his condition following the arrest.

The sequence of events shown in the video highlights the escalation of force during the encounter, beginning with verbal commands and progressing to less-lethal rounds before the K-9 unit was deployed.

Officials have not released further information regarding potential charges. The investigation into both the initial attack and the subsequent police response remains ongoing.

The video has circulated online, showing the moments leading up to the K-9 deployment and the arrest. Authorities have not indicated whether additional information or footage will be released as part of the investigation.
