WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW
  • Kamala Harris faced renewed ridicule after her 2023 explanation that AI is “two letters” resurfaced online.
  • Harris called for slowing AI development, pursuing international testing standards and establishing stronger congressional oversight.
  • Critics questioned whether Harris wrote her lengthy AI statement, with some suggesting it was generated by AI.
  • Trump rejected additional AI restrictions, arguing that American leadership must continue competing against China.

Former Vice President and failed presidential candidate Kamala Harris is facing a fresh round of ridicule after critics revived her 2023 explanation of artificial intelligence.

The clip returned after Harris called for slowing AI development and pursuing international restrictions.

Harris, who previously served as the Biden administration’s AI czar, posted a lengthy statement Monday.

She urged President Donald Trump to pursue a treaty with countries including China to stop dangerous uses of AI, limit development speed and adopt global testing standards.

Social media users answered by circulating footage from 2023, when Harris tried to break down the technology while serving as vice president.

“I think the first part of this issue that should be articulated is AI is kind of a fancy thing,” Harris said.

“First of all, it’s two letters. It means artificial intelligence, but ultimately what it is is it’s about machine learning.”

She then said machines are taught and discussed how information entering a machine can shape resulting decisions and opinions.

Harris reduced the issue to what goes into a decision and whether it reflects people’s needs and life experiences.

After Harris published her statement on X, conservative influencer Western Lensman reposted the old video and wrote, “Kamala Harris on AI when it’s not a written statement crafted by a team of consultants.”

National security and global economics expert Kyle Bass also questioned whether Harris had written the statement. Bass reacted, “There’s not a chance in hell Kamala wrote this.”

Columnist S.L. Kanthan wrote, “One of the dumbest women now wants America to voluntarily slow down progress in AI.” Kanthan also posted another video featuring Harris discussing cloud storage.

“No longer are you necessarily keeping those private files in some file cabinet that’s locked in the basement of the house,” Harris said.

“It’s on your laptop, and it’s then, therefore, up here in this cloud, that exists above us, right?”

Author and national security expert Sarah Adams responded to Harris with another jab, writing, “No one is looking for your thoughts on ‘intelligence.’”

Influencer Andrew Aziz and several others suggested that Harris’ statement itself was generated by AI.

In the post, Harris wrote that AI is “advancing at an alarming speed.”

She emphasized what she described as industry leaders’ call to “responsibly slow the pace of frontier AI development.”

Harris argued that “a slowdown is critical in order to ensure AI serves the public interest,” adding, “Pacing AI development does not mean giving up on this technology’s potential to produce life-saving benefits in fields like medicine — some of which we are already seeing. Rather, it is about setting up sensible guardrails so that AI does not completely escape human control and endanger our safety and collective future.”

Beyond her request for action from Trump, Harris called on Congress to “work at an urgent pace” to establish AI oversight.

She wrote, “The United States must continue to lead the world in developing AI technology even as we seek to impose common-sense safety standards.”

The frontier of artificial intelligence is advancing at an alarming speed. Over the weekend, industry leaders voiced support for an idea that the American people and many AI researchers in their own labs have been calling for: We must responsibly slow the pace of frontier AI…

Former President Barack Obama has also called for greater regulation.

During a private fundraiser in New York City on Thursday, Obama urged Democrats to put AI near the center of their agenda ahead of the midterms and the 2028 presidential race.

“This is something that is moving very fast in private hands, and if we don’t get on top of it, I think can be dangerous,” Obama said.

He also argued that AI could accelerate drug development and help identify pathways toward a clean energy future.

Trump, meanwhile, rejected growing demands for additional safeguards and restrictions on Monday.

He declared that AI needs a “STRONG AND SMART” president rather than more restraints.

“The only control or ‘guardrails’ that AI needs is a STRONG AND SMART (High IQ!) PRESIDENT, and the U.S.A. has that, in spades!” Trump wrote on Truth Social.

Trump also suggested that “there is a SICK conspiracy going on against AI and Data Centers, and the only one that is happy about it is China.”

He added, “WHOEVER WINS AI, WINS! We are leading China, and all others, and will continue to do so.”
