Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass is facing renewed scrutiny following allegations that she altered an internal Los Angeles Fire Department report after last year’s deadly wildfires in an effort to reduce the city’s potential legal liability, as reported by The Gateway Pundit.

The allegations stem from reporting that claims changes were made to an official after-action report examining the city’s response to the wildfires that killed 31 people across Southern California.

The Los Angeles Times confirms what we all suspected from the beginning:

The fires, which erupted last year, have continued to generate controversy over preparedness, emergency response, and the pace of rebuilding in affected areas.

Bass and California Gov. Gavin Newsom have both faced sustained criticism over their handling of the fires and the slow recovery efforts more than a year after the disaster.

Bass has consistently denied any involvement in altering the LAFD report.

According to Fox News, Bass is now facing blowback following a report by the Los Angeles Times that alleged she successfully changed portions of a critical after-action report to portray the city’s role more favorably.

“Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass is under fire this week after a Los Angeles Times report claiming she successfully altered in her favor a critical after-action report on the devastating Southern California wildfires that killed 31 people,” Fox News reported.

The Los Angeles Times report, citing two sources, stated that Bass was concerned the city could face legal exposure due to a lack of preparedness ahead of the fires.

According to the paper, language in the report that implicated the city was either removed or softened.

One of the most significant changes involved details regarding failures to fully staff and deploy firefighting resources before the fires began.

Staffing and deployment decisions have been a focal point of public scrutiny over the past year as questions persist about whether more aggressive preparation could have reduced the scale of the disaster.

The Times also cited a source described as a “Bass confidant,” who claimed, “the mayor didn’t tell the truth when she said she had nothing to do with changing the report.”

Bass has pushed back strongly against the allegations. She has denied interfering with the report and disputed the accuracy of the Times’ reporting.

In a video response circulated this week, Bass dismissed the claims, stating the allegations were fabricated.

The controversy has also revived criticism surrounding Bass’s decision to travel to Africa for an event just days before the fires broke out.

At the time of her departure, forecasts reportedly included hazardous conditions and warnings about elevated wildfire risks. Bass has previously defended the trip and denied that it affected the city’s emergency response.

The report in question was prepared by the Los Angeles Fire Department as part of a standard review process following major incidents.

After-action reports are typically used to assess response effectiveness, identify shortcomings, and recommend changes to prevent future disasters.

The allegations come as residents in fire-affected areas continue to raise concerns about accountability and transparency from city and state leadership.

With legal action still a possibility, the handling of the LAFD report is likely to remain under close examination in the months ahead.
