New York Gov. Kathy Hochul is facing criticism after a comment she made about the New York Knicks’ championship history drew attention online, prompting a response from Dan Bongino, who argued the governor and her office mishandled an obvious mistake.
The controversy began with an exchange between Hochul and a reporter discussing President Donald Trump and his support for the Knicks.
“Trump was saying he’s a lifelong Knicks fan. That’s how the Times reported it,” the reporter said.
In response, Hochul said, “I asked him to name the starting lineup from the 1993 championship team, and see how he does.”

The comment quickly drew attention because the Knicks did not win an NBA championship in 1993. The franchise’s most recent championship came in 1973.
Bongino highlighted the exchange during a discussion of the incident and argued that the error would have been apparent to basketball fans.
“You probably saw this clip, the Governor of New York, Kathy Hochul, here she is talking about the Knicks getting into the finals. She completely flubs it. If you say something stupid, just own it. She completely screws this up, and any basketball fan could have right away knew something was wrong with this. Check this out,” Bongino said before playing the exchange.
After replaying the clip, Bongino criticized Hochul’s statement and questioned how the mistake was made.

“So, Kathy Hochul doesn’t apparently know when the Knicks last won a championship. When did the Knicks win a championship? It clearly wasn’t 1993 that wasn’t the New York Bulls or the Chicago Knicks. Searching the web, Chat GPT 1973,” Bongino said.
Bongino argued that public officials are often better served by acknowledging a mistake rather than attempting to explain it away. He said the situation became more notable after a statement from Hochul’s press office suggested the governor had intentionally made the comment as a political tactic aimed at Trump.
“Now, you may have saw this yesterday. Why am I bringing it up? Because one of the golden rules of politics is, if you screw something up, either kind of ignore it and move on, or just own it and be like, I got a little aggressive, I meant to say 73 I screwed it up,” Bongino said.
He continued by criticizing the explanation offered by Hochul’s staff.
“Don’t claim like you did it to, like, as some tactical way to put Donald Trump on the defensive. Here’s Governor Hochul’s press office. Did you see this? She was baiting Donald Trump into pretending that team won the finals, a classic chess move. This has got to be one of the dumbest cell phones I’ve ever seen.”
Bongino concluded by urging the governor to move past the controversy rather than continue addressing it.
“Governor Hochul, just move on, just let it go. What’s that movie, Frozen? Let it go, just let it go.”
