WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW
  • Sen. Eric Schmitt accused former Special Counsel Jack Smith of lying about coordination with Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis.
  • Smith said the referenced “Hawks game” was a women’s college basketball game involving Iowa, not an event in Atlanta.
  • Sen. Katie Britt’s stunned reaction was captured by a hearing room camera and quickly spread across social media.
  • Journalists, podcasters, and X users mocked the collapsed accusation and predicted Britt’s expression would become a lasting meme.

A perjury accusation aimed at former Special Counsel Jack Smith fell apart in dramatic fashion during a fiery congressional hearing Tuesday, producing a viral reaction from Sen. Katie Britt.

The Alabama Republican happened to be sitting beside the colleague whose accusation rapidly unraveled, as reported by The New York Post.

Sen. Eric Schmitt (R-Mo.) suggested Smith had lied when he said he did not coordinate his case against President Trump with Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis.

Schmitt based the charge on text messages that appeared, at first glance, to place Smith in Atlanta.

The messages seemingly indicated that Smith was “in Atlanta” and attending a “Hawks game” in February of 2024.

From that wording, Schmitt pressed a theory that Smith had been near Willis while denying coordination with her.

The theory did not survive Smith’s response.

Smith explained that he had actually attended a women’s college basketball game between the Maryland Terrapins and Iowa Hawkeyes, who are occasionally known as the “Hawks.”

That game, according to Smith’s explanation at the hearing, did not put him anywhere near Willis in Atlanta.

The apparent geographic smoking gun had instead pointed to an entirely different sporting event.

As the accusation collapsed, a hearing room camera focused on Britt, who was seated next to Schmitt.

Her eyes widened, and her stunned expression supplied social media with a reaction shot tailor-made for instant circulation.

LMAOOOO

The clip quickly spread online because Britt’s face appeared to register the mistake in real time.

The spectacle was no longer just about Smith’s answer or Schmitt’s questioning, but also about the silent reaction unfolding one seat away.

Jessiah Eberlin, the lefty host of the “Pondering Politics” podcast, described Britt’s expression as a “look of UTTER HORROR.” That description soon became part of the online pile-on.

Journalist Matt Fuller offered a harsher assessment on X: “Sen. Katie Britt — a former congressional staffer herself — knew she was watching a mythical staff f–k up,” he wrote.

“The type of f–k up that interns will hear about as a cautionary tale on their first day of work on June 1, 2047.”

The reaction also received the television comedy treatment.

Podcaster Noel Fogelman added the absurdly upbeat “Curb Your Enthusiasm” theme music to the clip, sharpening the ridicule surrounding the botched line of attack.

Other users predicted the image would have a very long afterlife.

One X user wrote, “that face is going to be memed FOREVER,” capturing the expectation that Britt’s expression would become a durable online punchline.

Another user described the scene as “The moment Katie Britt’s soul left her body.” The line framed her visible shock as the defining feature of the exchange.

The viral focus remained on the instant Britt seemed to realize Schmitt’s mistake. Her reaction required no spoken comment, and the camera’s timing ensured that the hearing’s most memorable image came from the senator sitting beside him.

A post from Adam Wren summarized the clip simply: “The moment Sen. Katie Britt realized Schmitt’s mistake.” The wording matched the camera’s focus on her reaction.

Schmitt’s accusation had carried a serious implication because he was suggesting that Smith lied about coordination involving his case against Trump.

Yet Smith’s explanation turned the supposed Atlanta clue into a reference to Iowa’s women’s basketball team and its “Hawks” nickname.

That reversal transformed a pointed perjury accusation into a social media spectacle within moments.

Britt’s wide-eyed stare became the visual shorthand for the collapse, while commentators, journalists, podcasters, and X users raced to caption it.

What began with text messages and a claim about Atlanta ended with a basketball clarification and an avalanche of mockery.

The accusation may have been aimed at Smith, but Britt’s expression became the image people carried away from the hearing.
