A public dispute unfolded online this week between former Chicago Mayor Lori Lightfoot and a senior U.S. Border Patrol commander after the federal official suggested agents would continue operating in Chicago for years, as reported by Fox News.

Gregory Bovino, a senior U.S. Border Patrol commander overseeing Operation At Large in California, posted a message on X indicating that federal agents would maintain a presence in Chicago despite criticism from city leaders and activists.

“If you think we’re done with Chicago, you’d better check yourself before you wreck yourself,” Bovino wrote.

“Don’t call it a comeback; we’re gonna be here for years,” he added, referencing lyrics from LL Cool J’s song Mama Said Knock You Out. The post included a video montage with the song playing in the background.

Bovino has used social media in recent weeks to defend Border Patrol activity tied to enforcement operations involving criminal illegal aliens.

In another post last week, he wrote, “Don’t worry, Chicago, we will be here for YEARS! Despite calls for violence against our agents, the brave men and women of the United States Border Patrol have come together and developed serious plans to help Chicago rid their streets of criminal illegal aliens. We work for YOU.”

Former Chicago Mayor Lori Lightfoot responded directly to Bovino’s post, issuing a sharp rebuke.

“Glory hound Greg Bovino cannot resist acting a fool in the third largest media market,” Lightfoot wrote.

“The actions of the CBP militia under his command have been unconstitional [sic] and shameful. Hey, Greg, your day of reckoning is fast approaching.”

Bovino’s remarks and Lightfoot’s response drew further attention from current Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson, who has aligned himself with progressive opposition to federal immigration enforcement.

Johnson recently backed a proposal allowing residents to name a city snow plow “Abolish ICE,” referencing Immigration and Customs Enforcement.

“‘Abolish ICE’ has my full endorsement for the name of one of Chicago’s next Snow Plows,” Johnson wrote on X. “Remember to submit your choice by January 10th, 2026!”

Bovino responded directly to Johnson, criticizing the mayor’s focus on Border Patrol operations.

“Oh oh, i’ve got a nomination for the mayor,” Bovino wrote. “Name the plow ‘Reality Check’ and paint it green while your [sic] at it. Johnson obsesses over Border Patrol it seems!!”

Johnson then reposted a screenshot of Bovino’s message and highlighted what he described as a grammatical error.

“And reality check, Greg: Chicagoans vote on the snow plow names,” Johnson wrote. “The same people who want you out of our city.”

The exchange reflects ongoing friction between Chicago’s Democratic leadership and federal immigration authorities, particularly over enforcement operations targeting criminal illegal aliens.

Federal officials have defended their presence as necessary for public safety, while city leaders have criticized the operations as politically motivated and unconstitutional.

Neither the Department of Homeland Security nor Customs and Border Protection has announced any changes to enforcement activity in Chicago following the public exchanges.

Bovino has continued to emphasize that Border Patrol agents intend to maintain operations in the city.
