Markwayne Mullin Confirms Ilhan Omar Allegations Are Part of Ongoing Fraud Investigation [WATCH]

Markwayne Mullin said an investigation is underway into allegations involving Rep. Ilhan Omar and possible immigration fraud, telling Benny Johnson that investigators are examining more than the longstanding claim that Omar married her brother to facilitate his entry into the United States.

Johnson asked Mullin directly what would happen as authorities examine the allegations surrounding Omar.

“Okay, well, what’s going to happen, Mr. Secretary?” Johnson asked.

“Something’s going to happen. This is an ongoing investigation,” Mullin responded.

Mullin said investigators are looking at allegations involving Omar’s marriage as well as what he described as possible illegal activity connected to the family’s migration to the United States.

He stressed during the exchange that the allegations remain under investigation.

“We, we know that she married her, her brother to try to bring him into the United States. We know he lives now in London. We feel that this may, you know, there’s even may more be, there may be more to this, the whole family migration and possibly some illegal activity for them to come to the United States to begin with. But all of this is what we’re investigating,” Mullin said.

The allegation that Omar married her brother has circulated for years. Omar has denied it, and publicly available evidence has not established that her former husband was her biological brother. Recent reporting has indicated that federal immigration authorities have withheld records related to the allegations under an exemption covering information that could interfere with enforcement proceedings. Mullin said authorities want any case they ultimately bring to rest on evidence of violations rather than politics.

“Here’s what I want to make sure we do. If we actually move a case forward, it’s not a political case; it’s actual a case because they did things wrong,” Mullin said.

He then described the consequences he said could follow if investigators establish that someone lied on immigration documents or provided false information when seeking entry into the country.

“If you decided to break the law or lie on your, on the information you gave the United States to be able to come into the United States through either asylum or because you were just wanting to seek a better life, but you didn’t tell us who you actually were, you lied about certain things about your application, those things, there’s no expiration to that,” Mullin said.

Mullin said deportation would follow if authorities can prove someone was not legally entitled to be in the country.

“If we can prove it that then you shouldn’t have been here in the first place, we’ll deport you,” he said.

According to Mullin, investigators are examining other cases with circumstances they believe may involve fraud from the beginning of the immigration process.

He said the investigation therefore extends beyond the allegations surrounding Omar.

“And so we’re looking at, it’s more than just her case, we’re looking at a lot of cases that are very similar to this that we feel like there may have been fraud from the get-go,” Mullin said.

Mullin repeatedly emphasized that he viewed the matter as one of law enforcement rather than political retaliation. He said any action would be based on whether investigators could establish that federal law had been violated.

“But when we move forward, it’s not political, it’s because you chose to break the nation’s laws,” Mullin said.

He concluded by saying immigration laws should be enforced without exceptions based on an individual’s identity or political position.

“I don’t make the laws anymore. I’m in charge of enforcing the laws, and I will not pick and choose which laws I’m going to enforce and which laws I’m not,” Mullin said.

“I’m going to enforce all of them, regardless of who you are, regardless if you’re Omar or you’re some other individual in that community. We’re going to enforce it equally.”
