A holiday celebration in Nantucket descended into chaos over the weekend after a large street fight broke out during the island’s annual Christmas festivities, according to reports and witness accounts.

The incident occurred Saturday afternoon on Federal Street during Nantucket’s 51st Annual Christmas Stroll, a long-running seasonal event that draws hundreds of visitors to local businesses in one of the nation’s most expensive small towns.

The Nantucket Current reported that the confrontation erupted shortly after Santa Claus made his appearance, with the celebration quickly giving way to violence.

Video shared with the outlet captured roughly a dozen men, estimated to range in age from their 20s to their 60s, arguing in the middle of the street before shoving escalated into multiple physical altercations.

The footage shows the men splitting into smaller groups as the confrontation intensified.

“All of the sudden there were two groups,” a witness told KISS108 on Tuesday.

“It was kind of like the Jets and the Sharks from West Side Story, only in Ralph Lauren and Burberry. It was 20-somethings versus like 60-somethings.”

According to the video, one group included a younger man pushing an older individual, while another altercation showed a younger participant striking a man wearing a brown trench coat in the back of the neck.

In response, another person jumped onto the attacker’s back in an attempt to stop the assault.

The footage also shows one individual being thrown to the ground, while an older man charged toward a much younger person and attempted to land a punch.

The confrontation unfolded around a black SUV stopped in the roadway as the fight continued.

Several of the men were seen chasing one another through the street, exchanging punches and shoves as bystanders attempted to intervene.

The video depicts frantic efforts by onlookers to separate those involved while the confrontation spread across the roadway.

“It was crazy,” the onlooker told the radio station. “It was mayhem.”

The fight broke out after crowds had gathered nearby on Main Street to watch Santa Claus parade through town as part of the weekend-long Christmas Stroll.

The annual event features holiday decorations, shopping, and seasonal activities throughout Nantucket’s downtown area.

Despite the size and intensity of the altercation, it remains unclear what triggered the violence.

Witnesses did not indicate a specific cause, and authorities have not identified what led the men to begin fighting.

Nantucket police responded to the scene at approximately 2 p.m., according to the Nantucket Current.

However, no arrests were made, and none of the individuals involved chose to press charges, the outlet reported.

Law enforcement officials have not released the identities of those involved, and no injuries requiring medical attention were publicly confirmed.

Authorities indicated that the incident remains under investigation.
