A Sept. 2 crash in North Brunswick, New Jersey, involving a driver fleeing federal immigration agents has renewed a political dispute over the state’s restrictions on cooperation between local law enforcement and U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement, as reported by Red State.

The crash occurred on U.S. Route 130 after federal agents stopped a driver during a targeted immigration operation.

According to ICE, agents gave the driver repeated verbal warnings and attempted to remove him from the vehicle after concerns about officer safety. The driver then fled at a high rate of speed.

On Monday, an ICE vehicle drove into a prayer vigil outside Delaney Hall and drove over a woman’s foot.

Today, it appears an ICE involved car chase resulted in an accident involving the wife of the Mayor of East Brunswick.

The driver entered Route 130 and went through a red light before colliding with another vehicle in North Brunswick.

The other vehicle was a Tesla driven by Dr. Penelope Cohen, the wife of East Brunswick Mayor Brad Cohen. News 12 reported that Cohen suffered a leg injury.

The driver left the vehicle after the collision and attempted to flee on foot. Federal agents subsequently arrested him, according to local reporting.

The man’s identity had not been publicly released in the reports reviewed.

ICE provided Fox News Digital with its account of the encounter.

“After repeated verbal warnings and due to officer safety concerns, ICE officers relied on their training and attempted to safely remove the illegal alien [from their car]. The illegal alien then proceeded to flee at a high rate of speed and collided with other vehicles,” an ICE spokesperson said.

The incident quickly became part of the broader political dispute over New Jersey’s immigration policies. Rep. Bonnie Watson Coleman, D-N.J., whose district includes the area, addressed the crash on social media.

“Today, it appears an ICE-involved car chase resulted in an accident involving the wife of the Mayor of East Brunswick. ICE’s lawlessness is putting innocent people in harm’s way. #AbolishICE”

Watson Coleman also referenced an earlier incident involving an ICE vehicle and a prayer vigil outside Delaney Hall.

The crash has drawn criticism from Republicans who argue that New Jersey’s restrictions on cooperation between state and local authorities and federal immigration officials can complicate immigration enforcement.

New Jersey Gov. Mikie Sherrill, a Democrat, signed legislation in March codifying elements of the state’s existing “Trust Directive,” which limits the circumstances under which local law enforcement agencies cooperate with federal immigration authorities.

The policy has been a continuing point of contention between state Democrats and Republicans.

Assemblyman Paul Kanitra, R-10, said lawmakers had warned that the policy could produce problems.

“An illegal immigrant fled a targeted ICE operation in New Jersey, sped onto a major highway, ran a red light and slammed into a Tesla carrying the wife of East Brunswick’s Democratic mayor.”

Kanitra added:

“The crash on US-130 is the latest in a string of dangerous incidents critics tie directly to New Jersey’s sanctuary “Trust Directive” — codified into law this year by Gov. Sherrill. State lawmakers say they warned Democrats this exact kind of chaos would happen.”

“We all fought against it. We told them that this would create chaos, and it seems like Democrats are unable to take accountability for their own actions,” State Assemblyman Paul Kanitra told Fox News Digital.

State Sen. Mike Testa, R-Vineland, also criticized New Jersey’s approach to cooperation with ICE.

He said Cape May and Monmouth counties had sought the ability to establish 287(g) agreements with federal immigration authorities but had been unsuccessful under the state’s policies.

The incident has therefore become part of a larger debate over how federal immigration enforcement should operate in New Jersey and how much assistance local authorities should provide.

For now, the immediate facts of the case remain centered on the Sept. 2 traffic stop, the driver’s flight, the red-light violation, and the subsequent collision that injured Cohen.
