President Donald Trump has directed his Cabinet secretaries to take a precise approach to staffing cuts at federal agencies, emphasizing the need for strategic reductions rather than sweeping layoffs.
The directive follows a meeting focused on next steps for the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), which is overseen by Elon Musk.
Trump made the announcement Thursday afternoon in a post on Truth Social, where he outlined the administration’s strategy for reducing the size of the federal workforce.
Elon Musk Called This Financial News ‘Terrifying’
“The Golden Age of America has just begun! Over the past six weeks, our Administration has delivered on promises like no Administration before it, always putting America First! DOGE has been an incredible success, and now that we have my Cabinet in place, I have instructed the Secretaries and Leadership to work with DOGE on Cost Cutting measures and Staffing,” Trump wrote.
He clarified that agency heads should be deliberate in their decision-making. “As the Secretaries learn about, and understand, the people working for the various Departments, they can be very precise as to who will remain, and who will go. We say the ‘scalpel’ rather than the ‘hatchet.’ The combination of them, Elon, DOGE, and other great people will be able to do things at a historic level.”
Trump also detailed ongoing discussions with his Cabinet and Musk regarding the restructuring efforts.
“We just had a meeting with most of the Secretaries, Elon, and others, and it was a very positive one,” Trump said.
“It’s very important that we cut levels down to where they should be, but it’s also important to keep the best and most productive people. We’re going to have these meetings every two weeks until that aspect of this very necessary job is done.”

He added that the collaboration among his administration’s leadership is strong.
“The relationships between everybody in that room are extraordinary. They all want to get to the exact same place, which is, simply, to MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN!”
The Department of Government Efficiency has been aggressively reducing the federal workforce since Trump took office in January, eliminating thousands of positions in an effort to cut costs and streamline operations.

However, in recent days, a number of federal employees who had been laid off through the initial wave of DOGE cuts have been rehired.
This suggests that the administration is refining its strategy to ensure critical functions are maintained while still addressing waste, fraud, and bureaucratic inefficiencies.
With Musk at the helm of DOGE, the administration has prioritized aggressive spending cuts and accountability in government operations.
The department has already claimed to have saved taxpayers billions by eliminating unnecessary expenditures and trimming down bloated federal programs.
As Trump’s administration continues its restructuring efforts, the White House remains focused on ensuring that federal agencies operate efficiently while maintaining essential services.
The biweekly meetings between Trump, his Cabinet, and DOGE leadership will likely continue to shape the course of government reform in the months ahead.
