Joe Scarborough criticized Democratic Michigan Sen. Elissa Slotkin on Monday after she declined to identify any illegal orders issued by President Donald Trump during an interview on ABC’s “This Week,” as reported by the Independent Journal Review.

Slotkin was asked by host Martha Raddatz about a video circulating online that urged members of the military and intelligence community to disregard allegedly illegal orders. Slotkin responded that she could not point to an example of Trump issuing such an order.

Scarborough reacted on MS NOW’s “Morning Joe,” where he appeared with co-host Mika Brzezinski, and argued that Slotkin gave what he called the “wrong answer.”

He referenced previous administrations while insisting that presidents traditionally have broad authority over military action. “I’m sorry, with all due respect, wrong answer,” Scarborough said.

“President of the United States, the commander in chief, does have, Jonathan Lemire, wide latitude just does, and the Senate can take that up, but he has wide latitude on strikes, as Barack Obama and drone strikes, as George W Bush and drone strikes.”

Scarborough then cited a comment Trump made while aboard Air Force One.

“But where we know the president has said, I am going to give illegal orders to people in the military, is when he was on Air Force One coming back, I forget where he was coming back from, but he said, I can send the marines, I can send the army, I can send the air force, I can send the coast guard into any city,” Scarborough said.

“I want to control crime, and the courts can’t do anything about it. That’s illegal. That’s just illegal. And so, Democrats kind of need to if the president has already said, I’m going to commit this illegal act, then I’m kind of surprised they don’t have the answer when they go on a Sunday show for that.”

The exchange on “Morning Joe” followed discussion about recent U.S. military activity. American forces have carried out multiple strikes targeting vessels involved in drug trafficking since September 2, including the sinking of a boat carrying 11 members of the Venezuelan prison gang Tren de Aragua.

Jonathan Lemire, who joined the segment, commented on the political dimension surrounding the issue.

“Yeah. I mean, it’s also the bitter politics here, right? I mean, I think Americans are going to care more about the Marines and the armed forces on the streets of US cities than perhaps they will what’s happening in Venezuela now,” Lemire said.

“She’s not wrong. There are real questions about what’s happening in Venezuela as well. The president does have broad latitude, but they are going through gymnastics to try to justify politically.”

Scarborough added that Slotkin could have highlighted Trump’s past efforts to deploy federal personnel to cities. He referenced the period when Trump said forces were sent to protect federal property or assist federal law enforcement.

Immigration and Customs Enforcement operations and facilities in locations such as Chicago and Portland, Oregon, were targeted by rioters during that time.
