A musical comedy centered on Luigi Mangione, the man accused of killing UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson, is scheduled to premiere in New York City this summer, as reported by The New York Post.

“Luigi: The Musical” will debut June 15 at The Green Room 42 in Midtown West. The venue sits about a 20-minute subway ride from the Hilton Hotel, where Mangione allegedly gunned down Thompson in December 2024.

The production is described as a “satirical” take on Mangione’s life in detention while awaiting trial for the murder of the father of two.

Promotional materials bill it as “a tale of love, murder, and hashbrowns,” referencing reports that Mangione ate McDonald’s hashbrowns before his arrest in Pennsylvania.

The show’s creators say the project is intended to explore public reaction to the case rather than glorify violence. It originally premiered in San Francisco in 2025 and drew sold-out crowds, according to organizers.

The New York cast has not yet been announced. Representatives for “Luigi: The Musical” did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

The musical was created by songwriter Arielle Johnson and director Nova Bradford. Bradford said the concept began as an idea “scribbled on a napkin at the SF Eagle.”

“Luigi: the Musical uses comedy to bring deeper questions to the surface,” Bradford said in a statement posted on the show’s website.

“Why did this case garner the reaction that it did? And what happens when people stop trusting their institutions?” she added.

According to promotional descriptions, the musical portrays Mangione sharing a jail cell at Brooklyn’s Metropolitan Detention Center with convicted cryptocurrency fraudster Sam Bankman-Fried and hip-hop producer Sean “Diddy” Combs, who is described as disgraced.

The trio is depicted navigating “friendship, justice, and the absurdity of viral fame” through musical numbers, including “The Cheapest Room in Brooklyn” and “Bay Area Baby,” which is sung by Bankman-Fried.

A description for the show states, “Luigi: the Musical doesn’t glorify violence, it interrogates it. Beneath the absurdity and punchlines lies a serious critique of how violence is packaged, sold, and consumed in American media.”

The description continues: “The show takes aim at a culture where brutality is both entertainment and spectacle, inviting audiences to laugh while also asking why we’re so quick to tune in when someone gets hurt.”

In an interview with the San Francisco Chronicle, Bradford addressed concerns about producing a musical based on an ongoing murder case.

“We’re not valorizing any of these characters, and we’re also not trivializing any of their actions or alleged actions,” she said.

Mangione, 27, faces life in prison if convicted at his upcoming state murder trial, which is scheduled for June. Prosecutors allege he fatally shot Thompson in what authorities have described as a targeted attack on a Midtown sidewalk.

Mangione also faces a separate federal trial set to begin in September. Prosecutors have said they will not appeal a judge’s decision removing the death penalty as a potential sentence in the federal case. In that proceeding, Mangione will not be charged with murder but instead with “stalking” Thompson, a charge tied to the CEO’s death.

The Maryland native has pleaded not guilty in connection with Thompson’s killing.
